Buying tickets in Kraków
Train (SKA1, Koleje Małopolskie): 20 PLN to any station named Kraków (Główny, Grzegórzki, Zabłocie, Płaszów and others), 24 PLN to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. Luggage travels free; dogs cost 3 PLN. You can buy tickets from the ticket machine on board (cash or card), from the conductor (cash or card), at the Koleje Małopolskie ticket point at the airport (08:10–19:45, cash and card), on the Koleje Małopolskie website, or through the KOLEO and Jakdojade apps.
City and agglomeration buses (lines 209, 300, night 902): buy your ticket before you board, either from the machine in the arrivals hall on level 0 or from the machine at the bus stop (cash or card). Since 2 March 2026 the main fares are 4 PLN for 15 minutes, 6 PLN for a single trip or 30 minutes, 8 PLN for 60 minutes and 9 PLN for 90 minutes. A 24-hour ticket for zone I+II+III costs 25 PLN. Validate your ticket in the reader as soon as you board. Reduced fares are half price, but they apply only to people entitled to them under Polish rules.
Long-distance coaches (FlixBus, RegioJet, Neobus and others) leave from bus shelter 2 near the terminal footbridge. Book with the operator; prices change with demand.
Taxi scams & safety in Kraków
Kraków Airport Taxi (MPL Services) is the only official taxi service at the airport. Its cars wait at the covered rank right outside the terminal, 24 hours a day. They are black or silver (white if electric), and every car has a card terminal. The zone fares are fixed maximums by distance from the airport: 29 PLN up to 2.9 km, 49, 69, 89, 109 and 129 PLN up to 18.9 km, 149 PLN up to 22.9 km and 169 PLN up to 27 km. They are the same at any hour and on any day. For anything beyond 27 km, agree the price with the driver before you set off; it must not exceed 8 PLN per km. A second drop-off is charged on the meter, and waiting costs 35 PLN per hour.
The zone map is published only as an illustration. Most Old Town and Kazimierz addresses fall into the 109–129 PLN bands, so if a driver quotes much more for a city address, ask which zone he is using. Turn down anyone in the arrivals hall offering a ride who is not part of the official rank or a transfer you booked in advance. To book by phone, call +48 12 258 0 258 or +48 668 307 307 (call centre open 06:00–22:00).

Getting from KRK to Katowice (city centre)
The short version
Coach from the airport bay: from about 50 PLN, no change, departures roughly round the clock. Train via Kraków Główny: from about 52 PLN, one change, predictable timings. Car: about 55 minutes on the A4, from around 442 PLN pre-booked. Which suits you depends mainly on when you land and who is paying.
Direct coaches
Many long-distance routes pass Kraków Airport heading west, and several stop in Katowice. On its list of private carriers, the airport names FlixBus lines (among them N1393, N1362, N1309, N899, N1310, 916 and N913), the Neobus N3 line and RegioJet's Kraków Airport – Katowice Pyrzowice – Ostrava route. They all use bus shelter 2, in the bay by the terminal footbridge. FlixBus showed the earliest airport departure for Katowice at 00:05 and the last at 22:25, with fares from US$12.98 (about 50 PLN) when checked on 21 October 2026. Fares rise as a coach fills.
Check the destination stop. Most coaches end at or near Katowice's main bus and rail hub in the centre, but the RegioJet route serves Katowice Airport at Pyrzowice, north of the city, which is not where most visitors want to be.
Rail via Kraków Główny
The SKA1 airport train runs to Kraków Główny in 17 minutes for 20 PLN, at :17 and :47 most of the day. From there, PKP Intercity trains to Katowice take 51–71 minutes, with fares listed from 32 PLN on the EuroPodróże timetable. The last direct departure shown was 21:35. Regional trains also run on the line and are cheaper but slower. With the change, allow about 1 hour 45 minutes from the airport to Katowice station. The advantage over the coach is reliability: motorway incidents on the A4 do not affect the train.
Driving the A4
By car it is about 69 km and roughly 50–60 minutes, almost all of it on the A4. The Kraków–Katowice section is a tolled concession motorway, so a booked fare usually includes the toll. Check if the quote is low.
- Pre-booked transfer: Suntransfers quoted Katowice from about 101.19 EUR (around 442 PLN) on 21 October 2026, and about 109 EUR (roughly 477 PLN) for the next class up. The selling point for business trips is an invoiced price agreed in advance.
- Kraków Airport Taxi: the official rank operator agrees fares beyond 27 km before setting off, capped at 8 PLN per km, so about 555 PLN at most for 69 km. Drivers will issue an invoice on request, and cards are accepted.
Evening events at the Spodek or ICC
The Spodek arena and the International Congress Centre are a short walk north of Katowice's centre. On a concert or congress night, coaches into the city can be full and the A4 slow near the Katowice junctions. If your flight lands in the afternoon before an evening event, book the coach seat as soon as you know your arrival time, or take the train, which is not held up by event traffic.
Going back the other way
Coming back for a flight, the same coach lines run from Katowice to Kraków Airport, and the train goes via Kraków Główny with the SKA1 for the last 17 minutes. One trap: Katowice has its own airport at Pyrzowice, about 30 km north of the city, and some coaches and booking sites treat Katowice Airport and Kraków Airport as interchangeable options for Silesia. Check that your ticket says Kraków Airport (Balice), and allow extra time on the A4 at weekday rush hours around Katowice and Chrzanów.
Late arrivals
The listed 00:05 FlixBus departure means a late landing does not have to end in a taxi, but check that day's timetable, because night services do not run every day on every line. Trains from Kraków Główny to Katowice stop earlier, around 21:35 for the last direct Intercity service. After that, the realistic choices are the coach or a car.
Picking your option
- Booked into central Katowice, flexible, travelling light: the direct coach from the airport bay.
- A fixed meeting time and no tolerance for motorway delays: train via Kraków Główny.
- Company paying, or three or four people: a pre-booked car with an invoice.
