Buying tickets in Tenerife
Tenerife has no rail at all, so everything runs on TITSA's green guaguas. Buy a tenmás card for €2 from the machines or the TITSA desk and top it up with any amount: it takes roughly 20% off short hops and up to 30% off long intercity runs such as the airport to Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz, and one card can be tapped for several passengers. Without a card you pay the driver in cash. Airport lines are 111 (Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje), 343 (the express linking both island airports with Puerto de la Cruz), 450, 40, 415 and the 711 night service. The 343 runs to a sparse timetable, so check departures against your landing time rather than assuming a bus will be waiting.
Taxi scams & safety in Tenerife
Spain regulates taxis tightly and Tenerife is a low-risk airport: fares are metered, the rank outside arrivals is marshalled, and drivers are licensed. Take the next car in the queue rather than accepting an approach inside the terminal. Two legitimate charges surprise visitors and are not scams — the supplement after 22:00, and per-item luggage charges — so check the tariff card displayed in the vehicle rather than assuming you are being overcharged. The genuine risk here is car hire: always photograph the vehicle from every angle before leaving the lot, and be wary of counters offering a heavily discounted rate with a large fuel or excess deposit attached. Local firms such as Cicar and Autoreisen quote insurance-inclusive rates and are the safer default.
Getting from TFS to El Médano
El Médano is the closest town of any size to Tenerife South, seven kilometres along the coast, and you can see the airport from the beach. That proximity is not a coincidence — both sit on the flattest, windiest corner of the island, which is why one has a runway and the other has a kitesurfing scene. The journey takes ten minutes and costs under two euros, which makes this the cheapest airport transfer on Tenerife and one of the cheapest anywhere in the Canaries.
The wind is the whole reason you're going
El Médano gets the trade winds funnelled between Montaña Roja and the sea more or less constantly, and the town has been built around that fact. Board shops, schools, repair places, a long stretch of natural pale sand rather than the imported stuff further west, and a seafront of low buildings that still looks Spanish rather than resort-built. The crowd is mostly windsurfers, kiters and Canarians on weekend trips. If you came for a hotel pool and a buffet you have made a mistake; if you came with a board bag you have chosen well.
Two euros, fifteen minutes, and a walk at the end
TITSA's local services run the short coastal hop from the arrivals stops several times an hour in daytime, and the fare is somewhere between €1.40 and €2. Fifteen minutes including stops. There is nothing to plan and nothing to book. The single thing to weigh is the walk from the stop to the seafront apartments, which is fine with a rucksack and considerably less fine with a board bag and a kite in a wheeled coffin. That's the honest limit on the bus here — not the price, not the frequency, just how much awkward equipment you're dragging.
Oversized kit is the reason people book instead
A taxi from the rank is €12 to €18 for ten minutes and the drivers here are used to loading boards. A pre-booked transfer runs €22 to €32, and for such a short hop the premium isn't buying time — it's buying a vehicle you know will fit what you're carrying. Board bags don't go in every saloon. If you're arriving with a nine-foot bag, two kites and a harness, specifying oversized luggage at booking is what stops you standing at the rank watching three cars turn you down. Worth knowing too: many of the surf and kite schools here will arrange the pickup themselves if you ask when you book lessons or storage, often at a better rate than the transfer sites.
The car question, for once, has an interesting answer
From roughly €22 a day, and El Médano is the closest hire-car destination to the terminal on the island — five minutes down the coast road. The town is walkable end to end, so you don't need a car to live here. But roof bars and boot space make hire cars genuinely popular with windsurfers staying two or three weeks, because conditions move around the island: when El Médano is blown out or the swell is wrong, the spots on the north coast or over towards Los Cristianos may be working. Having wheels turns a fixed base into a flexible one. If you're here for four days, skip it; for a fortnight, most people take one.
Late arrivals, and what stays open
The local buses thin out in the evening as they do everywhere on Tenerife, and the night supplement on taxis kicks in after ten. At this distance neither matters much — a €12 fare going to €16 is not the same problem as an €80 fare going to €95. If you land at one in the morning, take the rank and don't think about it. That's the quiet advantage of staying seven kilometres from the runway: none of the usual arrival decisions carry any real weight.
Simply: bus if you're travelling light, rank if you're not or if it's late, pre-booked van if you're carrying boards. There is no expensive mistake available on this route, which is more than can be said for anywhere else on the island.
