Buying tickets in Corfu
Corfu runs two bus networks and only one serves the airport. The blue urban buses cover Corfu Town, and line 15 connects the terminal to the centre for about โฌ1.70 โ cash to the driver, exact change appreciated, every 30โ60 minutes, and no luggage compartment since it is an ordinary city bus. The green KTEL coaches are the intercity network reaching Sidari, Kavos (route B1, around โฌ5.30), Paleokastritsa, Kassiopi and the rest โ and they leave from their own terminal in Corfu Town, not from the airport. So any resort journey means a blue bus in, a walk between terminals, a second ticket and a green coach out. Green services thin out sharply outside July and August, so check the current timetable if you are travelling in the shoulder months.
Taxi scams & safety in Corfu
Corfu's airport taxis use fixed rates for common destinations rather than a meter โ roughly โฌ15 into town by day and โฌ20 after dark โ so there is little scope for dispute; agree the figure at the rank before loading. The queue rather than the price is the pressure point, since several charters often land together on summer Saturdays. Be aware that Corfu Town's old quarter is largely pedestrian, so a drop-off will be at the nearest vehicle access rather than your door; that is a planning matter, not a driver trying to cut the trip short. For car hire, inspect and photograph before you leave and confirm the excess in writing โ and note that the mountain roads to the north coast are winding rather than difficult, but they take longer than the distances suggest.
Getting from CFU to Sidari
Sidari is thirty-seven kilometres from the airport on Corfu's north coast, and there is no coach that goes there from the terminal. This surprises people, because Corfu is a major charter destination and Sidari is one of its biggest resorts โ but the island's intercity network runs from a terminal in Corfu Town, and the airport is not part of it. Your options are a transfer at around โฌ80, or a two-stage bus journey that takes over two hours.
What the cheap route actually involves
Blue line 15 from outside the terminal into Corfu Town, โฌ1.70, about fifteen minutes. Then a walk to the green KTEL terminal, a separate ticket, and the Sidari coach โ roughly an hour over the hills, at six or seven euros. Under ten euros in total against eighty for a car. The costs are time and effort: realistically two and a quarter hours door to door, two ticket purchases, and a change with luggage in the middle. It is entirely doable in daylight with a rucksack and a bad idea at eleven at night with a family.
Off-season the green coaches thin out sharply
The other thing to check. Sidari is a summer resort and the coach timetable reflects that: several services a day in July, a couple in May, and in winter a schedule built for villagers rather than visitors. If you are travelling in the shoulder months, look up the current KTEL timetable before assuming the bus route exists. Corfu's season now stretches from April to October for flights but not always for buses, and that gap catches people out in both directions.
Eighty euros for the car, whoever is in it
Pre-booked transfers to Sidari commonly come in around โฌ80 for a vehicle carrying up to three or four โ which is why groups book almost without thinking about it. Split between four that is twenty euros each against roughly nine on the bus, for an hour and a quarter saved and no changes. The taxi rank quotes similar money at a fixed rate. On this route the difference between booking and queueing is mainly certainty on a busy changeover afternoon.
The Canal d'Amour is smaller than the photographs suggest
Worth calibrating. Sidari's famous feature is a set of narrow inlets carved into soft sandstone cliffs at the western end of the resort, with a legend attached about swimming through the channel and finding love. It is genuinely striking, and it is also compact, busy in season, and gradually collapsing โ the sandstone erodes and the arch that gave the place its name fell years ago. The main beach is long, shallow and sandy, which is the real reason families come.
An hour of bends, not an hour of motorway
The drive north crosses the island's spine on roads that wind through olive groves and hill villages. Thirty-seven kilometres takes an hour because of the geometry, not the traffic. Anyone prone to car sickness should sit forward and skip the coach's back seats. It is a pretty run in daylight and completely dark at night, which is another small argument for having a driver who knows it.
A car turns the north coast into a base
Hire at โฌ25 to โฌ50 a day and Sidari stops being an endpoint. Roda, Acharavi and Kassiopi are strung east along the same coast; Paleokastritsa's bays are half an hour south; the road up Pantokrator starts inland. Without a car you are on a coach network that runs a couple of times a day outside high summer. Parking in Sidari itself is adequate but fills in August, and most hotels have their own.
A last detail: Sidari's sandstone means the sea goes cloudy after a blow, sometimes for a day or two. It settles quickly, but if the water looks milky on your first afternoon that is geology rather than pollution.
The honest summary: nine euros and two and a quarter hours, or eighty euros and an hour. Groups and families should book the car; solo travellers with time and a small bag will find the coach route perfectly civilised in daylight.
