Buying tickets in Corfu
Corfu runs two bus networks and only one serves the airport. The blue urban buses cover Corfu Town, and line 15 connects the terminal to the centre for about €1.70 — cash to the driver, exact change appreciated, every 30–60 minutes, and no luggage compartment since it is an ordinary city bus. The green KTEL coaches are the intercity network reaching Sidari, Kavos (route B1, around €5.30), Paleokastritsa, Kassiopi and the rest — and they leave from their own terminal in Corfu Town, not from the airport. So any resort journey means a blue bus in, a walk between terminals, a second ticket and a green coach out. Green services thin out sharply outside July and August, so check the current timetable if you are travelling in the shoulder months.
Taxi scams & safety in Corfu
Corfu's airport taxis use fixed rates for common destinations rather than a meter — roughly €15 into town by day and €20 after dark — so there is little scope for dispute; agree the figure at the rank before loading. The queue rather than the price is the pressure point, since several charters often land together on summer Saturdays. Be aware that Corfu Town's old quarter is largely pedestrian, so a drop-off will be at the nearest vehicle access rather than your door; that is a planning matter, not a driver trying to cut the trip short. For car hire, inspect and photograph before you leave and confirm the excess in writing — and note that the mountain roads to the north coast are winding rather than difficult, but they take longer than the distances suggest.
Getting from CFU to Acharavi
Acharavi runs for several kilometres along a single straight road on Corfu's north coast, thirty-eight kilometres and about an hour from the airport. It is the flattest resort on the island and one of the easiest to navigate once you are there — everything is on that one road — but like every Corfu resort it has no direct coach from the terminal, and the journey involves a change in town.
The one road makes the bus stop convenient
An unusual advantage here. The green KTEL north-coast coach runs along the main road through Acharavi, and because the resort is laid out along that road rather than spreading back from a beach, the stops are genuinely close to most accommodation. That is not true at Sidari or Paleokastritsa. So while the journey is the standard two-stage affair — blue line 15 into Corfu Town for €1.70, then a green coach north for six or seven euros — the arrival end is less painful than usual. Budget a bit over two hours in total.
Eighty euros buys back an hour and a quarter
A pre-booked transfer runs €72 to €90 for the car, the rank quotes similar. The north-coast resorts — Roda, Acharavi, Sidari, Kassiopi — are all roughly the same distance and price from the airport, so if you are still choosing between them, transfer cost will not be the deciding factor. What varies is character: Roda is small and cheap, Sidari is busy and young, Acharavi is long and quiet, Kassiopi is smarter and hillier.
Pantokrator rises directly behind
Corfu's highest mountain, 906 metres, sits immediately inland from Acharavi, and the road to the summit — past the village of Old Perithia, a semi-abandoned Venetian settlement now partly restored as tavernas — starts a few minutes from the resort. The view from the top takes in Albania, the whole island and, on a clear day, Italy. It is the standard excursion from this coast and it needs a car; no bus goes anywhere near it.
The beach is long, pebbly and rarely crowded
Set expectations. Acharavi's beach runs the length of the resort in coarse sand and pebble, shelving gently, backed by the road rather than by dunes or cliffs. It is not the prettiest on Corfu — that would be the west coast — but it is quiet, easy to walk and rarely full even in August, because there is simply so much of it. The sea here faces north towards Albania, which means calmer water than the west coast and a slightly cooler breeze.
An older crowd and what follows from it
Acharavi draws a lot of returning visitors, many of them couples and families past the water-slide stage, and the resort has shaped itself accordingly: proper tavernas rather than a strip, a handful of low-key bars, a supermarket that stocks what people actually cook with, and a weekly market. That makes it a comfortable place to settle for a fortnight and a dull one for anyone wanting nightlife, which is fifteen minutes west at Sidari.
Off-season the coach service becomes theoretical
The standing warning for the north coast. Green KTEL services drop to a couple a day outside the summer months and in winter run on a schedule designed for local residents. If you are visiting in April, May or October — increasingly popular for Corfu, since the flights now run — check the current timetable rather than assuming, and consider that a hire car at €25 to €50 a day may be less an option than a requirement.
Parking, for once, is easy
One small pleasure of a resort built along a flat road: there is space. Most hotels and apartments here have their own parking and the road has room besides, which is not the case at Paleokastritsa or in Corfu Town. If you are hiring a car anywhere on this island, this is a comfortable base to do it from.
In short: eight to ten euros and a bit over two hours by public transport, with a coach stop that is actually near your hotel for once — or €72–90 for a car if you are landing late or travelling as a family.
