Buying tickets in Samos
Samos has no rail. KTEL Samou runs one airport route: terminal → Pythagorio → Mytilinioi → Vathy, at €2–4 depending on distance, a few times a day Monday to Saturday and thinner on Sundays. Everywhere else — Kokkari, Karlovasi, the west — means changing at the KTEL station in Vathy, which is where all island routes begin. Pay the driver in cash. Because the timetable is built around islanders rather than flights, check the board on your way out of arrivals: if the next departure is three hours off, the taxi rank is a few steps away and fares here are modest by Greek island standards. Pythagorio's harbour also runs the 90-minute crossing to Kusadasi in Turkey, which is how a large share of visitors actually arrive.

Getting from SMI to Pythagorio

The ferry terminal sits at the eastern end of the harbour, separate from the taverna-lined quay where the yachts tie up. Tell the driver you want the ferry and you will be set down at the right doors; say "Pythagorio" and you may be dropped in the middle of town with fifteen minutes and a suitcase. The crossing to the Turkish coast takes about ninety minutes and runs daily in season, which is why a substantial share of visitors to Samos arrive and leave by sea rather than through the terminal.
What is actually in the town
Pythagorio is built over the ancient capital, and the layers are unusually visible. The Eupalinos tunnel — a kilometre-long aqueduct dug through a hill from both ends simultaneously in the sixth century BC, meeting in the middle — is a twenty-minute walk uphill and open to visitors. The harbour mole rests on ancient foundations. A ruined castle sits above the town, and the Heraion sanctuary is eight kilometres west. Together they make up one of the two UNESCO listings on Samos.
The small-fleet problem
Worth knowing before an evening arrival. Samos handles relatively few flights and the taxi fleet is sized accordingly. One full aircraft can clear the rank, and the next car may be twenty minutes away. If you land on the last flight of the day and have a ferry, a hotel check-in deadline or small children, a pre-booked transfer at €22 to €30 removes a risk that is small but real.
Hire car, and the reservation to make early

Pythagorio itself is walkable and the summer parking near the harbour is tight, so the car is for the island — Samos is big, green and mountainous, with villages and beaches spread across a coastline that takes real time to drive. Season shapes what is open
Samos runs a shorter season than the big charter islands. Pythagorio is busy from June to September and noticeably quieter either side, with a good share of the harbour tavernas shut by late October and the Kusadasi crossing dropping to a reduced winter timetable or stopping altogether. Flights thin out too. If you are booking for May or October, check both the ferry schedule and whether your accommodation is actually open, because listings sometimes stay live after the shutters go up.
So: take the €12 taxi and think no further, unless a bus happens to be due. Name the ferry terminal if you have a boat to catch, and reserve a car in advance if the island rather than the town is the plan.
