Buying tickets in Samos
Samos has no rail. KTEL Samou runs one airport route: terminal → Pythagorio → Mytilinioi → Vathy, at €2–4 depending on distance, a few times a day Monday to Saturday and thinner on Sundays. Everywhere else — Kokkari, Karlovasi, the west — means changing at the KTEL station in Vathy, which is where all island routes begin. Pay the driver in cash. Because the timetable is built around islanders rather than flights, check the board on your way out of arrivals: if the next departure is three hours off, the taxi rank is a few steps away and fares here are modest by Greek island standards. Pythagorio's harbour also runs the 90-minute crossing to Kusadasi in Turkey, which is how a large share of visitors actually arrive.

Samos is a low-risk airport and fares are reasonable — roughly €12 to Pythagorio, €20–30 to Vathy, €26–33 to Kokkari, with a night rate on top. The practical risk is not overcharging but availability: this island handles few flights and the taxi fleet is sized to match, so one full arrival can clear the rank and leave you waiting. If you land on the last flight of the day, or have a same-day ferry to Kusadasi or an overnight boat to Piraeus, book ahead rather than assuming. The other reason is the return leg: the north coast is thirty-five minutes from the terminal and early flights leave long before the first bus of the day, so arranging both directions when you book removes the one genuinely awkward moment of staying here.
The mountain villages are the reason to hire a car
Twenty minutes up the slope behind Kokkari are Vourliotes and Manolates, stone villages in chestnut and pine forest with plane-shaded squares, and between them the Nightingale valley walk. The road up is narrow and hairpinned and there is no useful bus. From the same base the north-coast road runs west past Agios Konstantinos to Karlovasi, and the Zoodochos Pigi monastery road heads east. At €25 to €45 a day this is where a car earns its keep on Samos.

For completeness: airport service to Vathy at three or four euros, then the westbound coast service for two or three more. The headland splits Kokkari into a western bay, where the wind and the windsurfers are, and a smaller sheltered eastern one behind the old village. Accommodation listings rarely make the distinction clear, but it decides what your afternoons feel like: the western side is dramatic and often choppy, the eastern side calm enough for children. Both are pebble rather than sand. If the listing mentions the windsurf school as a selling point, you are on the west.
