Positano has two road entrances and a one-way system that loops down through the town. Cars stop where the road allows and hotels are reached by steps โ tell your hotel your arrival time and they will usually meet you or send a porter.
Where to catch it: Published predetermined fare, supplements included, tolls extra. An hour and a half on the motorway and then the coast road.

Book the return at the same time. Positano's one-way loop and summer congestion mean drivers build in extra time for departures, and finding a car at short notice in August is genuinely hard.
Where to catch it: The standard arrangement here. Drivers know which of the two entrances serves which cluster of hotels, which saves a considerable climb.

Avoids the coast road, which in August is worth a great deal. The catch is the same as everywhere in Positano: from the jetty it is steps upward to almost everything.

Buying tickets in Naples
Naples has no airport rail link and does not need one: the Alibus shuttle leaves from directly outside arrivals, costs โฌ5, and reaches Piazza Garibaldi (Napoli Centrale) in 20โ30 minutes before continuing to Piazza Municipio by the port in 35โ40. The detail most arrivals miss is that the ticket is integrated and valid for 90 minutes across other urban services โ so if your hotel needs a metro or funicular leg afterwards, the same โฌ5 covers it. Buy from the machine, the ANM app or on board, and validate. For onward journeys, the Curreri coach runs from the same area down the peninsula to Sorrento, and the Circumvesuviana commuter railway from the lower level of Napoli Centrale serves Pompeii and the coast cheaply โ get off at Pompei Scavi for the ruins, not plain Pompei, which is a different line and a 20-minute walk away.
Taxi scams & safety in Naples
Naples does something no other airport in this guide does: the city publishes binding fixed taxi fares with every supplement already inside the number โ airport pickup, night, holiday, luggage and radio booking included. โฌ21 to Napoli Centrale, โฌ24 to Piazza Municipio, the port and the ZTL historic centre, โฌ125 to Sorrento, โฌ145 Positano, โฌ155 Amalfi, โฌ160 Ravello, one way per vehicle. Say "tariffa predeterminata" and name the destination as you get in, and the meter should stay off; motorway tolls and a minivan supplement are the normal exceptions. If a driver starts the meter for a listed destination, repeating the phrase is the correct response and an entirely routine one. Use the official rank rather than an approach inside the terminal. Do not hire a car for a Naples city stay โ the centro storico is a camera-enforced restricted zone and parking is genuinely hard; hire later for Pompeii or the coast instead.
Getting from NAP to Positano
Whatever you arrive in โ a โฌ145 fixed-fare taxi, a private transfer, a coach or a ferry โ the last part of the journey to your hotel in Positano is on foot, down steps. There is no version of this where a vehicle takes you to the door, unless your hotel is one of a handful on the upper road. The town is built down a near-vertical cliff and its lanes are staircases. This is worth internalising before you pack.
The road, and the loop
Positano has two entrances off the coast road and a one-way system that drops through the town and comes back out. Drivers know which entrance serves which cluster of hotels, and the difference between being let out at the right one and the wrong one can be a hundred steps or more. Give the exact hotel name when you book, not just the town.
What the fixed fare covers
โฌ145 from the airport, one way per vehicle, with airport, night, holiday and luggage supplements already inside it. Motorway tolls and the minivan surcharge are extra. Ninety minutes on a good day. Say tariffa predeterminata and the meter stays off โ this is a published municipal figure rather than a negotiation.
Arriving by sea instead
From April to October, fast ferries run down the coast from Naples and across from Sorrento and Amalfi. The jetty at Positano is at beach level, below everything. That sounds like a disadvantage and is often the opposite: many hotels are easier to reach going up from the beach than down from the road, and several will meet the boat if you tell them which one. It also avoids the coast road in the season when the coast road is worst.
The bus is cheap and unforgiving
Curreri to Sorrento, then the SITA coast bus, for fifteen to nineteen euros. The stops are at the top of the town on the main road. From there it is the full descent on foot with your luggage โ feasible with a rucksack, punishing with cases. In August the bus is standing room only.
The steps, honestly
Positano's charm and its difficulty are the same fact. There are lifts in some of the larger hotels and a small internal bus that loops between the upper road and the centre, but the town fundamentally works on stairs. Anyone with a mobility limitation should ask very specific questions before booking โ how many steps, whether there is a lift, and where the nearest vehicle access lies.
What people come for
The look of it, mostly โ pastel houses tumbling to a grey-sand beach, the majolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta at the bottom. Beyond that, the boat to Li Galli and the Isole Nereo, the path to Nocelle, and Spiaggia del Fornillo round the headland, which is quieter than the main beach and reached by a cliff walkway. Evenings are for the beachfront and it stays busy late.
Booking both directions
Book your departure transfer at the same time as your arrival. The one-way loop, the summer congestion and the early flight times combine badly, and drivers build in a substantial buffer for airport runs from here. Finding a car at short notice in August is close to impossible.
Moving on from here
SITA buses run in both directions along the coast road, and in season boats leave the beach for Amalfi, Capri and Sorrento. The boats are better: faster, more comfortable, and immune to the traffic that turns a twenty-minute drive to Amalfi into an hour. Buy tickets at the kiosk on the beach rather than assuming you can board.
The season, and what it does to everything
Positano in June or late September is a different town from Positano in the first fortnight of August. Prices, road congestion, boat availability and the density of people on the beach path all shift sharply. The shoulder months are warm enough to swim and quiet enough to get a table, which is why a good many returning visitors stopped coming in high summer.
