Buying tickets in Naples
Naples has no airport rail link and does not need one: the Alibus shuttle leaves from directly outside arrivals, costs €5, and reaches Piazza Garibaldi (Napoli Centrale) in 20–30 minutes before continuing to Piazza Municipio by the port in 35–40. The detail most arrivals miss is that the ticket is integrated and valid for 90 minutes across other urban services — so if your hotel needs a metro or funicular leg afterwards, the same €5 covers it. Buy from the machine, the ANM app or on board, and validate. For onward journeys, the Curreri coach runs from the same area down the peninsula to Sorrento, and the Circumvesuviana commuter railway from the lower level of Napoli Centrale serves Pompeii and the coast cheaply — get off at Pompei Scavi for the ruins, not plain Pompei, which is a different line and a 20-minute walk away.
Taxi scams & safety in Naples
Naples does something no other airport in this guide does: the city publishes binding fixed taxi fares with every supplement already inside the number — airport pickup, night, holiday, luggage and radio booking included. €21 to Napoli Centrale, €24 to Piazza Municipio, the port and the ZTL historic centre, €125 to Sorrento, €145 Positano, €155 Amalfi, €160 Ravello, one way per vehicle. Say "tariffa predeterminata" and name the destination as you get in, and the meter should stay off; motorway tolls and a minivan supplement are the normal exceptions. If a driver starts the meter for a listed destination, repeating the phrase is the correct response and an entirely routine one. Use the official rank rather than an approach inside the terminal. Do not hire a car for a Naples city stay — the centro storico is a camera-enforced restricted zone and parking is genuinely hard; hire later for Pompeii or the coast instead.
Getting from NAP to Naples Port (Molo Beverello)
Naples has more than one port, and saying "the port" to a taxi driver is not enough. Molo Beverello is where the fast hydrofoils leave for Capri, Ischia and Procida. Calata Porta di Massa, a few minutes further east, is where the slower car ferries go. Stazione Marittima is the cruise terminal. They are separate quays with separate check-ins, and turning up at the wrong one with twenty minutes to spare is a bad afternoon. Name the berth.
The €24 that solves most of this
The port is on Naples's published fixed-fare list at €24 from the airport, supplements included. Half an hour, straight to the quay, with a price you knew before you landed. For anyone holding a booked sailing that is the sensible choice — it removes the two variables that matter, which are city traffic and the possibility of a bus running late.
The Alibus alternative
Five euros, and it terminates at Piazza Municipio, which is a few minutes' walk from the Beverello berths. Thirty-five to forty minutes in theory. In practice the Alibus sits in Naples traffic like everything else, and Naples traffic is not predictable in either direction. If your boat leaves in an hour, take the taxi. If it leaves in three, the bus is fine and you will have seen more of the city.
Boat times, and the trap in them
Hydrofoils to Capri stop running in the early evening — well before you would expect for a route that busy. A flight landing after about six in the evening does not connect to a same-day crossing, and trying to make it work usually ends with an unplanned night in Naples anyway. Plan the night deliberately instead. Rough weather cancels sailings outright, sometimes for a full day, and the islands lose their connections entirely when it does.
Which island, and from where
Capri, Ischia and Procida all run from Beverello, but Capri is also reachable from Sorrento in twenty minutes, which is faster and cheaper if you are staying down the peninsula. Ischia has more sailings than most people expect, including from Pozzuoli, which is closer to the airport and much quieter. Procida is the smallest and the least visited, and the crossing is under an hour.
Do not bring a car
Capri does not admit visitor cars at all, and Ischia restricts them seasonally with a permit system that hire companies will not help you with. If the islands are your destination, travel as a foot passenger. Capri's own transport — the funicular from Marina Grande, the buses to Anacapri, the chairlift to Monte Solaro — covers the island perfectly well.
The area around the quays
Piazza Municipio has been rebuilt around its metro station and the Castel Nuovo stands beside it, with the Galleria Umberto and the Teatro San Carlo a short walk up. If you have two hours before a sailing, that is enough to see the castle courtyard and get a coffee somewhere worth the trip. Left luggage exists near the terminals but is not always open when you want it.
Cruise arrivals
Ships dock at Stazione Marittima, which is the closest terminal to the city centre of any Italian cruise port — you walk off the ship into the middle of Naples. That makes independent excursions genuinely practical here, whether to Pompeii on the Circumvesuviana or into the historic centre on foot. Ask which berth your ship uses, since the larger vessels sometimes tie up further along the quay.
Buying tickets for the boats
Several operators run the same routes from Beverello and their tickets are not interchangeable — Caremar, SNAV, NLG and Alilauro among them. In high season the popular morning crossings to Capri sell out, so book online the day before rather than turning up. Foot passengers can usually find something on the same day outside July and August, but the sailing you get may not be the one you wanted.
What the walk between quays involves
Beverello and Porta di Massa are about ten minutes apart on foot along the waterfront, with a road crossing and no shade. With cases that is a longer ten minutes than it sounds. If your ferry has been moved between berths — which happens when weather forces the hydrofoils to stand down and passengers transfer to the car ferries — allow for it rather than assuming a shuttle exists.
