Mykonos runs buses from two separate stations in Chora and confusing them is the classic mistake. Fabrika (South Station) serves the airport, the New Port at Tourlos and the southern beaches — Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise. Old Port (North Station) serves Ano Mera inland and the eastern beaches at Elia, Kalafatis and Agios Stefanos. They are ten minutes apart on foot. The airport service runs roughly hourly in summer (about 09:15–22:15) for around €3; other singles are €1.80–2.80. Cash to the driver — card acceptance is inconsistent. The beach routes run notably late in peak season: Platis Gialos until roughly 03:00 and the last bus back from Paradise around 02:30. Note that no vehicle enters Chora; the old town is entirely pedestrian.
Taxi scams & safety in Mykonos
The defining issue on Mykonos is not price but supply. The island's taxi fleet is capped at a few dozen vehicles for somewhere handling well over a million passengers a year, so when several flights land together the rank empties in minutes and does not refill quickly. Pre-booking is the norm here rather than a precaution. Fares themselves are regulated: roughly €17–25 to Chora plus a €2.85 airport surcharge payable in cash, with a higher meter between midnight and 05:00. That surcharge is legitimate, not an invention. Two further points: hire cars, quads and scooters cost well above other Greek islands and the coast roads have a poor accident record with enforced drink-driving checks; and most rental agreements prohibit taking the vehicle to another island by ferry.
Getting from JMK to New Port (Tourlos)
The New Port at Tourlos is six kilometres from the airport, two north of Chora, and it is where the fast ferries from Piraeus and Rafina dock along with the cruise ships and most inter-island boats. For a large share of visitors it is not a destination but a connection — fly in, sail out, sometimes on the same afternoon — and that makes the timing more important than the fare.
Say New Port, not just port
Mykonos has two. The Old Port sits at the northern edge of Chora and still handles some smaller boats and the Delos excursions; the New Port at Tourlos, two kilometres further north, takes the ferries and the cruise ships. Telling a driver "the port" can land you at the wrong one with a boat leaving from the other. The names are used inconsistently even locally, so if you have a ticket, check which the operator means.
Around €19 including the surcharge

The practical rule for a same-day flight-to-ferry connection on Mykonos. Landing, baggage, finding transport in a fleet-constrained system, twelve minutes of road, and then the ferry's own boarding cut-off — an hour leaves no room for anything to go wrong, and something frequently does in July. If your itinerary is tight, a pre-booked car at €30 to €48 removes the one variable you cannot control.
Island-hopping, and why so many people pass through
Mykonos is a hub for the Cyclades: fast boats run to Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Ios and Tinos, several a day in season. A great many visitors fly into JMK and sail on within hours, which is why this six-kilometre route sees more luggage than most. The port has a proper terminal building with ticket offices, but queues at the counters on a summer morning are long — buy online in advance if you can.
What is actually at Tourlos
Not much, deliberately. The New Port is a working harbour with a terminal, car parks and a taxi rank, and the settlement around it is thin. If you have hours to wait, Chora is a short bus ride or a forty-minute walk along the coast road. Do not plan to spend an afternoon at the port itself; there is very little there.
Hire cars and taking them off the island
€35 to €90 a day, with limited short-stay parking at the port that fills on ferry arrivals. If you are collecting a car and thinking of taking it to another island, check the rental agreement first — most Mykonos contracts prohibit it outright, and doing it anyway voids the insurance.
Cruise days change everything
When two or three ships berth at Tourlos on the same morning, several thousand passengers come ashore within an hour and the road into Chora, the taxi rank and the old town all feel it. Cruise schedules are published in advance and worth a glance if you are arriving or departing that day — an extra twenty minutes of margin costs nothing and the alternative is discovering the queue at the worst moment.
