Buying tickets in Catania
The AMT Alibus is the whole system here: a flat โฌ4 from outside arrivals to Catania Centrale railway station and on through the centre, 20โ25 minutes, every 20โ25 minutes with a reduced night service. Buy from the machine or the tobacconist inside the terminal โ on-board tickets cost more. For the rest of eastern Sicily the airport is a coach hub rather than a city airport: Interbus runs direct from the terminal bays to Taormina (โฌ7โ9, 70โ90 minutes, roughly hourly) and to Syracuse (โฌ7โ10, about 75 minutes), with partner services to Messina, Ragusa and Palermo. Buy at the Interbus desk or on board. Sunday timetables are noticeably thinner and evening departures stop earlier than most arrivals expect โ a flight landing at 22:00 in July can miss the last coach south. Note the trap with the train to Taormina: the station is at sea level, three hundred metres below the town, so the coach that climbs the hill is the better answer for the same money.
Taxi scams & safety in Catania
The thing to plan around at Fontanarossa is not a fare but a volcano. Etna's ash grounds flights here several times most years, sometimes for more than a day, and it is the standard reason people miss Sicilian cruise sailings and onward connections. Leave a buffer on departure day, especially in the weeks after an eruption. On the ground, taxis are straightforward but not cheap โ โฌ25โ35 into the city, โฌ90โ120 to Taormina, โฌ100โ135 to Syracuse โ and on the long runs you should agree the figure before setting off rather than rely on the meter. Use the official rank. Car hire is genuinely useful in eastern Sicily, unlike in Naples or Venice, but collect the car on the day you leave Catania rather than on arrival: the city centre is a camera-enforced ZTL with scarce metered parking. If you plan to take a hire car on a ferry off the island, read the contract first โ it is a common exclusion with significant penalties.
Getting from CTA to Noto
Noto was destroyed completely in 1693 and rebuilt from nothing, on a new site, in a single architectural style over the following decades. That is why it looks the way it does โ a whole town in one idiom, in a honey-coloured limestone that turns gold in the late afternoon. It is ninety kilometres from Catania Airport and there is no direct bus, which is the practical fact to plan around.
The car is the answer here
An hour and forty minutes on the motorway past Syracuse and then inland, with paid parking outside the historic centre. It is the only way to reach Noto directly from the airport, and it is also what makes the rest of the Val di Noto possible โ Modica, Ragusa Ibla and Scicli are each half an hour further and poorly linked to each other by public transport.
The bus route, if you must
Interbus to Syracuse, then a connecting service to Noto. Around fifteen euros total and well over two hours with the change, which can be a long one. Sunday services thin considerably. It works, and it is not a pleasant introduction to a town this far from anywhere.
What the rebuilding produced
Corso Vittorio Emanuele runs through the middle with three squares off it, each with a church, and the whole thing was designed as a set piece with sight lines and staircases. The cathedral's dome collapsed in 1996 and was rebuilt over a decade. The Palazzo Nicolaci has balconies held up by carved horses, lions and grotesques that are the most photographed thing in the town.
The light, which is the point
The stone is soft and pale gold, and in the hour before sunset the whole Corso turns the colour of the name. This is not a marketing claim; it is why photographers come. Middle of the day in July, the same street is white and glaring and considerably less interesting.
The Infiorata, in May
One street is carpeted in flower petals in elaborate designs for a weekend each May, and the town fills. It is worth seeing if you are in the area and worth avoiding if you wanted the town quiet.
Where people actually stay
Increasingly in the countryside around, at converted masserie and farm properties among the almond and carob trees. These have no bus service whatsoever, and several are down white gravel lanes several kilometres long. If you are booking a transfer, send coordinates rather than an address and ask about the final stretch.
The rest of the Val di Noto
Modica is built down two sides of a gorge with a church at the top of a great staircase, and it makes chocolate by a cold Aztec method the Spanish brought over. Ragusa Ibla is the older half of Ragusa, on its own hill across a ravine. Scicli is smaller and largely undiscovered. All three are UNESCO-listed with Noto for the same reason.
The beaches nobody mentions
Noto has a coastline โ Lido di Noto and the Vendicari nature reserve, which has salt pans, flamingos in season, a ruined tuna fishery and beaches that are among the best in Sicily. It is twenty minutes from the town and it is why a good many people stay a week rather than a day.
The food
This corner of Sicily takes its almonds, its citrus and its Nero d'Avola wine seriously, and Avola itself is ten minutes away. There is a cafรฉ on the Corso whose granita has a reputation across the island โ almond, mulberry, and lemon, eaten with a brioche for breakfast, which is the correct local practice.
The distance, honestly
Ninety kilometres is at the edge of what a Catania taxi will do, at โฌ140 to โฌ190, and a pre-booked transfer costs about the same with more certainty. If Noto is the point of your trip, hire a car at the airport. If it is a day out from Syracuse, go from there instead โ it is forty minutes.
Timing a visit
Spring and autumn are best; July and August are hot enough inland to make walking the Corso in the middle of the day unappealing. The town is small and two nights covers it comfortably, with the surrounding towns and the reserve filling out a week.
