Buying tickets in Catania
The AMT Alibus is the whole system here: a flat โฌ4 from outside arrivals to Catania Centrale railway station and on through the centre, 20โ25 minutes, every 20โ25 minutes with a reduced night service. Buy from the machine or the tobacconist inside the terminal โ on-board tickets cost more. For the rest of eastern Sicily the airport is a coach hub rather than a city airport: Interbus runs direct from the terminal bays to Taormina (โฌ7โ9, 70โ90 minutes, roughly hourly) and to Syracuse (โฌ7โ10, about 75 minutes), with partner services to Messina, Ragusa and Palermo. Buy at the Interbus desk or on board. Sunday timetables are noticeably thinner and evening departures stop earlier than most arrivals expect โ a flight landing at 22:00 in July can miss the last coach south. Note the trap with the train to Taormina: the station is at sea level, three hundred metres below the town, so the coach that climbs the hill is the better answer for the same money.
Taxi scams & safety in Catania
The thing to plan around at Fontanarossa is not a fare but a volcano. Etna's ash grounds flights here several times most years, sometimes for more than a day, and it is the standard reason people miss Sicilian cruise sailings and onward connections. Leave a buffer on departure day, especially in the weeks after an eruption. On the ground, taxis are straightforward but not cheap โ โฌ25โ35 into the city, โฌ90โ120 to Taormina, โฌ100โ135 to Syracuse โ and on the long runs you should agree the figure before setting off rather than rely on the meter. Use the official rank. Car hire is genuinely useful in eastern Sicily, unlike in Naples or Venice, but collect the car on the day you leave Catania rather than on arrival: the city centre is a camera-enforced ZTL with scarce metered parking. If you plan to take a hire car on a ferry off the island, read the contract first โ it is a common exclusion with significant penalties.

The one daily bus
AST runs a single morning departure from near Catania Centrale up to Rifugio Sapienza, returning in the afternoon. It costs very little and it is entirely rigid โ miss it and the day is gone. Reaching it from the airport means the Alibus in first, which works if your flight lands early enough and does not if it does not.
What happens at 1,900 metres
The cable car climbs to about 2,500. From there, four-wheel-drive buses with guides go higher, to around 2,900, which is as close to the active craters as visitors are permitted. Whether they run at all depends on the volcano's current state, and access is restricted or withdrawn without notice when activity increases. Check on the day.
Dress for the altitude, not the coast
Sea level in Catania can be thirty degrees while the top of the cable car is close to freezing with wind. There is often snow into May and sometimes June. Boots, a windproof layer and something warm are not optional, and the rental of jackets and boots at Sapienza exists because so many people arrive in shorts.
The Silvestri craters, free and at the bottom
Right by the Rifugio Sapienza car park are the Silvestri craters, formed in an 1892 eruption โ walkable, no ticket, no cable car, black gravel underfoot and views down the mountain. A great many visitors do these and skip the ascent entirely, and on a cloudy day that is the sensible call.
The north side is different
Piano Provenzana on the northern flank is quieter, greener and reached through the Ragabo pine forest. It has its own four-wheel-drive tours and a ski station in winter. Getting there is longer from the airport and there is no public transport at all โ this is a hire-car destination or nothing.
Tours that collect from the airport
Several Etna operators will meet you at arrivals as part of a half-day trip, at โฌ90 to โฌ160 for the vehicle. The advantage over a hire car is that a driver will hold your luggage while you go up, which matters if Etna is a stop on the way to somewhere else rather than a day out from a hotel.
When the road closes
Eruptions close the summit road, and so does snow in winter. Both happen with little warning. The regional civil protection service publishes the current status and the tour operators know it before anyone else โ a quick check before setting off saves an hour of driving to a barrier.
The wine, which surprises people
The volcano's slopes carry old vineyards on terraces of black soil, and Etna Rosso from Nerello Mascalese has become one of Italy's more sought-after wines in the past twenty years. The producers are scattered around the northern and eastern flanks between Randazzo and Linguaglossa, mostly down unmarked lanes.
The railway round the base
The Circumetnea is a narrow-gauge line running from Catania most of the way around Etna through the lava fields, the pistachio country at Bronte and the towns on the western side. It takes the best part of a day and it costs a few euros. It does not go up the mountain, and it is the best way to understand its scale.
Ash, and your flight home
The same volcano that you have come to see closes the airport you are flying out of, several times in a normal year. It is worth holding that in mind when planning a tight onward connection, and it is the reason experienced visitors leave a day of slack at the end of a Sicilian trip.
