By transport mode
Bus / shuttle
The People Mover runs on an elevated track and takes three minutes. It is signposted from the bus terminal but not obviously; look for the ramp at the western edge of the square.
Where to catch it: Bus to Piazzale Roma (โฌ12), then the People Mover โ a short automated shuttle at about โฌ1.50 โ up to Marittima.

Buying tickets in Venice
Venice is the one airport here where you choose between road and water, and the two have entirely separate ticketing. By road, ATVO's express and ACTV's line 5 both run to Piazzale Roma in 20โ25 minutes for about โฌ12 single, โฌ20 return โ buy the return on arrival if you are flying home from the same airport. Piazzale Roma is where all wheeled transport in Venice stops for good; a vaporetto ticket beyond it is bought separately and is not cheap. By water, Alilaguna waterbuses leave from a dock about seven minutes' walk from arrivals at roughly โฌ18, serving San Marco, Rialto, Fondamente Nove, Murano and the Lido โ approximately hourly per line, between about 08:00 and 20:00, so check the last departure before counting on it. Large luggage can attract a small extra charge. For Mestre on the mainland, a separate bus runs for around โฌ8, and trains from there into the island take ten minutes for about โฌ1.50.
Taxi scams & safety in Venice
The real trap in Venice is not a dishonest fare, it is the bridges. There are around four hundred of them, most stepped, with no lifts or escalators anywhere in the historic centre โ so a hotel three hundred metres from a vaporetto stop can mean two bridges with heavy cases. Ask your hotel which stop it uses and how many bridges lie between before you book any transport. Private water taxis are the only vehicles that can reach a hotel's own water entrance, at โฌ190โ280 and up; agree the price and the exact drop-off point before boarding, since night and luggage supplements are normal and the fare is not metered. Shared water taxis at around โฌ39 a head are the sensible middle. Two specific things to decline: the "free transfer" offered near vaporetto stops for Murano, which is a glass-showroom sales trip rather than transport, and any suggestion that a hire car will be useful โ it cannot pass Piazzale Roma, and garage parking there is charged by the day.
Getting from VCE to Venice Cruise Port
The cruise terminals at Marittima sit at the western end of Venice, past Piazzale Roma, and reaching them involves one connection that is easy to miss: the People Mover, a short automated shuttle on an elevated track. Bus to Piazzale Roma for โฌ12, then the People Mover for about โฌ1.50, three minutes, and you are at the terminals. Total around โฌ14 and thirty-five minutes.
Finding the People Mover
It is signposted from the bus terminal but not prominently. Look for the ramp at the western edge of Piazzale Roma, near the car parks. It runs every seven minutes or so and connects Piazzale Roma, Marittima and Tronchetto island. With cruise luggage this is far easier than the walk, which is longer than it looks and crosses a bridge.
The taxi option, and why it is popular here
โฌ45 to โฌ65 from the airport, thirty minutes, and land taxis can drive into the Marittima area and reach the terminal buildings directly โ which the buses cannot. On embarkation day with two large cases each, that is worth the money. Give the terminal number if you have it.
Marittima is bigger than you think
The quay runs for well over a kilometre with several separate terminal buildings, and the walk between them is not short. Your cruise line will tell you which terminal your ship uses, usually in the final documents. Turning up at the wrong end of Marittima on sailing day is a twenty-minute walk you did not plan.
Arriving by water instead
A private water taxi can come alongside at Marittima for โฌ180 to โฌ260. It is an expensive way to start a cruise and a memorable one, and it avoids Piazzale Roma entirely. Confirm with the operator that your terminal accepts water-taxi drop-offs on your date, since access varies by berth.
The large-ship question
Since 2021 the largest cruise ships have been barred from the Giudecca Canal and the San Marco basin, and the biggest vessels now dock at Marghera on the industrial mainland rather than at Marittima. This changes your transfer completely โ Marghera is a different place with a different journey. Check where your ship actually berths rather than assuming Venice means Marittima.
Flying in the same day
It works, and it carries the usual risk. Cruise-line transfers cost more than independent ones but the ship knows you are on them, which matters if your flight is delayed. Independent operators track flights and are cheaper. Either is better than a same-day connection with no margin, particularly in winter when Marco Polo takes fog delays.
The day before, in Venice
If you have a night before sailing, staying near Piazzale Roma or in Santa Croce puts you within easy reach of the People Mover in the morning and inside the city in the evening. It is not the prettiest corner of Venice but it is the practical one, and hotel prices there sit below the San Marco end.
Left luggage on disembarkation day
Ships turn passengers out early and flights often leave late, which produces a long day with suitcases. There is left luggage at Santa Lucia railway station and at Piazzale Roma, both reachable on the People Mover, and both fill up in season. Booking a late hotel checkout the night before is sometimes cheaper than the alternative.
What to do with the hours in between
From Piazzale Roma, vaporetto line 1 down the Grand Canal and back is about ninety minutes and shows you the whole city from the water without walking anywhere. It is the best use of a gap between a ship and a flight, and considerably better than sitting in the terminal.
One practical warning
Venice's high water โ acqua alta โ peaks between October and January and floods the low-lying parts of the city, including some walking routes near the port. Raised walkways are put out and the city publishes forecasts. It does not stop ships sailing, but it can add an hour to a journey you thought was straightforward.
