Buying tickets in Larnaca
Cyprus has no railway. From Larnaca the cheap way into town is an ordinary city bus — Cyprus Public Transport (Zenon) routes 425 and 429, roughly €1.50 to €2.40 paid to the driver, running about every 30 minutes from 05:55 to 23:25. The stop is outside the Departures hall at the far left end of the terminal, not outside Arrivals, which catches most first-time arrivals out. For everywhere else there are coaches: Kapnos Airport Shuttle to Nicosia (€9), Ayia Napa (about €13) and Paphos, and the separately-run Limassol Airport Express (€10 adult, €5 child). Buy coach tickets online in advance or at the desk in arrivals; luggage travels in the hold.
Taxi scams & safety in Larnaca
Cyprus taxis run a day tariff and a night tariff that starts at 20:30, raising both the flag-fall and the per-kilometre rate. A great many charter flights land after that, so a higher fare late at night is usually legitimate rather than a scam — but it is also why you should establish the basis of the charge before setting off. For long resort runs drivers normally quote a fixed price instead of metering; agree the figure and the exact hotel before the boot opens. The Limassol route is where this matters most, with fixed quotes starting around €48 against meters that can reach €86 for the same journey. Use the rank outside arrivals rather than accepting an offer inside. If you hire a car, remember Cyprus drives on the left, hire cars carry red plates, and most agreements have specific terms about crossing the Green Line — read them before you attempt it.
Getting from LCA to Pernera
Pernera is what people choose when Protaras looks too busy and Ayia Napa is out of the question entirely. Sixty-two kilometres from Larnaca airport, a few kilometres north of Fig Tree Bay, and built around a small fishing harbour and a run of sheltered coves rather than a strip. The trade for that quiet is that the coach network stops short of it, and getting here needs either a car or a change.
There's no direct coach, and the connection costs an hour
Kapnos runs east to Ayia Napa and Protaras. Pernera sits beyond both, so the public route means riding the eastern coach to Protaras and covering the last few kilometres by local bus or a short taxi. All in, that's roughly €14 to €18 and about ninety minutes door to door — against fifty-five minutes in a car. Perfectly reasonable if you're travelling light on a weekday afternoon; considerably less so with two cases, a buggy and a flight that landed at eleven at night. Know which of those you are before you decide.
Fixed fares here run a little above Protaras
Drivers quote €70 to €85 for Pernera, a few euros above the Protaras rate because it's a few kilometres further along the coast, and the night tariff from 20:30 applies as everywhere on the island. Agree the figure before loading. The other thing to agree is exactly which property — several complexes here have similar names and they're spread along a couple of kilometres of coast road, so "Pernera" on its own leaves the driver guessing at the far end.
Why families end up booking rather than queueing
This is a resort of apartment complexes and self-catering rather than big hotels, and its market is families who want the eastern beaches without the noise. Two things follow. First, child seats: legally required, and a rank can't promise them, while a booked transfer at €65 to €82 lets you specify them in advance. Second, the addresses. A pre-booked driver has the complex on file; a rank driver may not know it at all. Between those two, most Pernera arrivals are pre-arranged before the family leaves home, and the per-vehicle pricing makes it competitive with four coach tickets anyway.
The coves are the point, and they're spread out
Orientation that affects whether you need a car for the week. Pernera's coastline is a series of small sandy bays — Kalamies, Louma, Sirena — separated by low rock, each with a handful of sunbeds and a taverna. They're linked by a coastal path that runs south towards Fig Tree Bay, which is a pleasant half-hour walk. Northwards the coast becomes quieter still towards Agia Triada. Nothing is far, but nothing is quite together either, which is a different arrangement from a resort with one main beach.
A car turns quiet into convenient
Budget €25–55 daily, and most complexes here have free parking, which is not true in the bigger resorts. With a car, Protaras is ten minutes, Cape Greco twenty, Ayia Napa twenty-five, and the eastern beaches are all in reach for an afternoon. Without one, you're reliant on a local bus service that runs to a holiday timetable and thins out in the evening. Plan the return, because it's early and it's far
Departures from Larnaca to northern Europe cluster in the early morning, and there is no coach from Pernera at five o'clock. Book the return car when you book the arrival — the firms here are based nearer the main resorts and a same-day request for a dawn pickup sixty kilometres out is not something to leave to chance.
