Milton Keynes is one of the easier regional trips from Luton. Arriva's X1 runs hourly from the airport bus station along the Luton–Dunstable busway and up the A5 to the city centre, at local bus fares. National Express coaches are quicker to the Coachway at M1 junction 14 but leave you on the edge of the city. A car is the simplest option, but nowhere near the cheapest.

Before you ride

Buying tickets in London

Luton DART: buy a single at lutondart.com and keep it as a mobile wallet pass or PDF, or tap a contactless card at the barriers. Oyster cards are not accepted. An adult single is £4.90, a child (5–15) £2.45, and under-5s ride free. If you buy a National Rail ticket to or from Luton Airport with Thameslink, East Midlands Railway or Luton Airport Express, the DART is already included. A ticket to Luton Airport Parkway does not include it.

Trains: Advance fares from Luton Airport Parkway start at £6.50 on Thameslink and £10 on the Luton Airport Express, before the DART is added. Advance tickets tie you to one train. For a flight that could be delayed, an Off-Peak or Anytime ticket is the safer choice. Thameslink offers a third off for groups of 3 to 9 adults.

Coaches: book National Express at nationalexpress.com or in its app. The £1.50 booking fee is waived if you are logged in to My Account. Greenline 757 tickets are sold at the airport and London Victoria sales desks, online, or from the driver. Both operators sell tickets at the Onward Travel Centre just past Arrivals. Local Arriva and Stagecoach buses take contactless payment, and single fares are as low as £3.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in London

Official taxis: the only rank is the one marked just beyond bus bay A, outside the terminal. The vehicles are Luton Borough Council-licensed hackney carriages on a meter. Before you set off on a long run, ask the driver for an estimate, because no fixed fare to London is published. Turn down anyone who offers a ride inside the terminal. Licensed private-hire cars cannot pick up unless you have booked them.

Pre-booked cars and lifts: the forecourt Drop Off and Pick Up Zone costs £7 for 10 minutes and then £1 a minute. Drivers usually pass this charge on, so ask whether your quote includes it. The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, which a free 24-hour shuttle bus links to the terminal about every 20 minutes.

Ticket traps: buying a train ticket from "Luton Airport Parkway" instead of "Luton Airport" leaves you £4.90 short at the DART barrier. Advance train and coach fares only cover the booked departure. On National Express Standard fares you can switch to a similar coach within 3 hours either side of your booked time.

Getting around

Step-free access in London

The Luton DART is fully accessible and step-free between Luton Airport Parkway and the terminal entrance. Disability badge holders and older person's bus pass holders ride the DART free, but they must register first on the Luton DART concessions page and upload proof. Approval can take up to 72 hours.

  • If you book assistance through your airline, the DART team will help with the connection between terminal and station.
  • For help on the train, contact the Luton Airport Express (East Midlands Railway) or Thameslink assisted-travel teams directly.
  • Scheduled coaches stop right outside the terminal, and all bus stops are 50–100 metres from the entrance. Check with the coach or bus operator that your service is accessible.

Getting from LTN to Milton Keynes (Central)

The local bus

Most airport trips involve a premium fare. This one doesn't. Arriva's buses from the airport are ordinary local services, so they come under England's £3 single-fare cap, which is set to last until March 2027. The airport itself lists bus journeys "as little as £3". That is the cheapest way from Luton to Milton Keynes by some distance.

Which bus?

All the Arriva routes leave from bay J at the airport bus station.

  • X1 is the direct one. Since 31 May 2026 it runs from the airport along the guided busway to Dunstable, then up the A5 to Central Milton Keynes. The airport describes it as the fastest bus, at just over an hour. It runs hourly from Monday to Saturday.
  • X2 / X3 take a slower commuter route through Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and Bletchley. Use these if you are going to Bletchley or Leighton Buzzard rather than the centre. Combined, they run up to every 30 minutes on weekdays.
  • MK1 (Stagecoach) leaves from bay D and runs hourly via Bedford. It takes 70–90 minutes, so it only suits the eastern side of Milton Keynes or Bedford itself.

Pay the driver by contactless. Check Sunday X1 times before you travel, because the airport's summary only lists Monday to Saturday.

Coaches to the Coachway

National Express routes 230, 240, 422, 707, 737 and 777 all call at Milton Keynes Coachway, beside the M1 at junction 14, after leaving the airport from stands N, P or Q. They are quicker than the bus. On the 707 timetable from 21 October, for example, the 08:15 from the airport reaches the Coachway at 08:55, and the 737's 11:05 departure arrives at 11:50. Between the different routes there are departures through the day and some at night: the 737 leaves at 02:50 and 23:50, and the 707 at 01:55. However, the Coachway is a park-and-ride site on the city's edge, not the centre. Getting to Central Milton Keynes or the railway station takes another bus or a taxi. Prices vary by route and date, so check them on the National Express site.

Driving, and what it costs

The car journey is about 45 km: up the M1 to junction 13 or 14, then into the grid roads. Allow 40–60 minutes. Online transfer platforms list a standard car from about £115 one way, which reflects airport pricing rather than a short local trip. Asking a Milton Keynes or Luton private-hire firm directly sometimes gets a lower quote. The rank cabs at Luton are metered under Luton Borough Council's tariff and charge their airport rate.

A family of four with several cases could reasonably choose a car. For a lone traveller with a backpack, the X1 does the job for a small fraction of the price.

Arriving late

Local buses wind down in the evening. After the last X1, the remaining public options are the overnight National Express departures to the Coachway, plus a taxi from there. If you land after about 22:00, book a car from the airport in advance.

Small details

  • The X1 calls at Luton Station Interchange on the way out, so you can change onto it there from trains.
  • Bletchley and Leighton Buzzard are on the X2/X3 and X4, not the X1.
  • If you are going on by train, Milton Keynes Central station is at the western end of the city centre grid.

From Milton Keynes to the airport

Going south is just as easy. The X1 leaves from Central Milton Keynes for the busway and the airport. The coaches from the Coachway run at useful early hours: the 737 leaves at 02:05 and 05:20 and reaches Luton Airport at 02:45 and 06:00, and the 707 leaves at 03:50 and reaches the airport at 04:20 (weekday timetables from 21 October 2026). That makes the Coachway, with its own parking, worth considering for a 06:00 flight even if you live in the centre. All coaches stop right outside the terminal, so there is no DART fare to pay.
