Victoria is where the coach makes the most sense. National Express and Greenline both start outside the terminal and finish at Victoria, so you stay in one seat with your luggage underneath the whole way. Coaches also run all night, which matters on Luton's late easyJet and Wizz arrivals. On a weekday afternoon a train plus the Tube is quicker, but it means changing.

Before you ride

Buying tickets in London

Luton DART: buy a single at lutondart.com and keep it as a mobile wallet pass or PDF, or tap a contactless card at the barriers. Oyster cards are not accepted. An adult single is £4.90, a child (5–15) £2.45, and under-5s ride free. If you buy a National Rail ticket to or from Luton Airport with Thameslink, East Midlands Railway or Luton Airport Express, the DART is already included. A ticket to Luton Airport Parkway does not include it.

Trains: Advance fares from Luton Airport Parkway start at £6.50 on Thameslink and £10 on the Luton Airport Express, before the DART is added. Advance tickets tie you to one train. For a flight that could be delayed, an Off-Peak or Anytime ticket is the safer choice. Thameslink offers a third off for groups of 3 to 9 adults.

Coaches: book National Express at nationalexpress.com or in its app. The £1.50 booking fee is waived if you are logged in to My Account. Greenline 757 tickets are sold at the airport and London Victoria sales desks, online, or from the driver. Both operators sell tickets at the Onward Travel Centre just past Arrivals. Local Arriva and Stagecoach buses take contactless payment, and single fares are as low as £3.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in London

Official taxis: the only rank is the one marked just beyond bus bay A, outside the terminal. The vehicles are Luton Borough Council-licensed hackney carriages on a meter. Before you set off on a long run, ask the driver for an estimate, because no fixed fare to London is published. Turn down anyone who offers a ride inside the terminal. Licensed private-hire cars cannot pick up unless you have booked them.

Pre-booked cars and lifts: the forecourt Drop Off and Pick Up Zone costs £7 for 10 minutes and then £1 a minute. Drivers usually pass this charge on, so ask whether your quote includes it. The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, which a free 24-hour shuttle bus links to the terminal about every 20 minutes.

Ticket traps: buying a train ticket from "Luton Airport Parkway" instead of "Luton Airport" leaves you £4.90 short at the DART barrier. Advance train and coach fares only cover the booked departure. On National Express Standard fares you can switch to a similar coach within 3 hours either side of your booked time.

Getting around

Step-free access in London

The Luton DART is fully accessible and step-free between Luton Airport Parkway and the terminal entrance. Disability badge holders and older person's bus pass holders ride the DART free, but they must register first on the Luton DART concessions page and upload proof. Approval can take up to 72 hours.

  • If you book assistance through your airline, the DART team will help with the connection between terminal and station.
  • For help on the train, contact the Luton Airport Express (East Midlands Railway) or Thameslink assisted-travel teams directly.
  • Scheduled coaches stop right outside the terminal, and all bus stops are 50–100 metres from the entrance. Check with the coach or bus operator that your service is accessible.

Getting from LTN to London Victoria (Coach & Rail Station)

Why Victoria is a coach run

Most London routes from Luton suit the train better. Victoria is the exception, because three National Express routes and Arriva's Greenline 757 all end there. You get on outside the terminal, put the suitcase in the hold, and get off at Victoria about an hour and a half later without having carried your bags through a station.

The National Express timetable

National Express leaves from stands R and S at the airport bus station, directly in front of the terminal exit. The three routes differ slightly.

  • A31 takes the faster line, with only a handful of stops: Finchley Road, St John's Wood, Baker Street, Marble Arch, then Victoria rail station and the coach station. The 05:05 departure reaches Victoria Coach Station at 06:15. Daytime runs take about 85–95 minutes.
  • A1 adds Golders Green and Portman Square, and takes about 95–110 minutes to the coach station.
  • A2 is the night route. During the day it runs to Paddington, but from mid-evening until early morning it continues to Marble Arch, Victoria rail station and Victoria Coach Station. Late departures run roughly every 30 minutes, and some leave between midnight and 05:00.

National Express advertises up to 47 London departures a day, with fares from £7 one way. That price includes a £1.50 booking fee, which is waived if you are logged in to My Account. You can bring one large or two medium cases and a soft carry-on. A Standard ticket lets you take a similar coach within three hours either side of your booking. That flexibility helps if your flight lands late.

Greenline 757

Arriva's 757 leaves from bay K. In the timetable linked from the airport site, departures are at 05 and 35 minutes past the hour from 08:05 to 23:35, then 00:05, 00:35, 01:05, 01:35, 02:05, 03:05, 04:05, 05:05, 06:05 and 07:05. It goes via Brent Cross, Finchley Road, Lord's, Baker Street and Marble Arch, and ends at Buckingham Palace Road by Victoria. Late at night it takes about 85 minutes, and in the daytime closer to 95. Arriva's ticket page lists £14 one way and £16 return from the airport to central London, but it is undated, so check before you travel. You can buy at the airport sales desk, online, or from the driver.

Faster option: train plus the Victoria line

On weekdays between about 07:00 and 10:00, and again from 16:00, Finchley Road and Park Lane can add half an hour to any coach. In those hours, take the DART to Luton Airport Parkway and a train to St Pancras, then ride the Victoria line south four stops to Victoria. Allow about an hour from terminal to Victoria. Buy the rail ticket to "Luton Airport" so the £4.90 DART is included.

Arriving at night

Luton gets plenty of flights after 23:00. Between the A2 and the 757, a coach leaves for Victoria roughly every half hour until the early morning, and then at least hourly. It is a fixed-price seat with no surge pricing.

Door to door for a group

A pre-booked sedan to a hotel near Victoria usually costs £75–£120 on booking sites, the same range as for the rest of central London. For three adults with big bags, that can work out at about the same per person as three walk-up train fares, and the car drops you at the hotel door. The metered black cabs at the rank beyond bus bay A have no fixed London fare, so expect a figure at the top of that range or above it.

Your stop at Victoria

Coaches stop at Victoria rail station (Buckingham Palace Road) before the coach station. Get off there if you want the Tube or trains to Gatwick and Brighton. Victoria Coach Station is about 300 metres further on and is the place for onward National Express coaches.

Going back to Luton from Victoria

Coaches to the airport leave from different places. National Express departs from the Departures Hall at Victoria Coach Station (stands N, P or Q, according to the airport) and also picks up at Buckingham Palace Road stop 11. The A31 leaves the coach station at 05:50, then hourly from 07:00 to 18:00, and reaches Luton about 70 minutes later. Greenline 757 picks up at Buckingham Palace Road stop 6 and Victoria stop 11, every half hour or so by day and through the night, from 00:15 onwards. Both arrive in front of the terminal, so there is no DART connection to make. For a 06:00 flight, the 757 times between 02:15 and 03:15 from Victoria arrive at the airport between about 03:40 and 04:40.
