London Luton Airport to Central London (St Pancras / King's Cross)
St Pancras is about 55 km from Luton Airport. The fastest route is the DART plus the Luton Airport Express, about 32 minutes in all. Thameslink runs all night, and coaches to Baker Street start at £7.

Two trains on one ticket is the short answer. The automated DART takes you from the terminal to Luton Airport Parkway, and from there a non-stop Luton Airport Express or a Thameslink train runs into St Pancras, next to King's Cross. Buy the ticket to "Luton Airport" and the DART is included. Coaches cost less, but the road into London is slow at rush hour. A taxi is the most expensive way to make the trip.

Every way to get there

What it costs for your group
The bus / shuttle is charged per person, while a private transfer is one price for the whole car — so the more of you there are, the better door-to-door value looks.

| Solo · 1 traveller | £7 | £75 | Bus / shuttle |

Buying tickets in London
Luton DART: buy a single at lutondart.com and keep it as a mobile wallet pass or PDF, or tap a contactless card at the barriers. Oyster cards are not accepted. An adult single is £4.90, a child (5–15) £2.45, and under-5s ride free. If you buy a National Rail ticket to or from Luton Airport with Thameslink, East Midlands Railway or Luton Airport Express, the DART is already included. A ticket to Luton Airport Parkway does not include it.
Trains: Advance fares from Luton Airport Parkway start at £6.50 on Thameslink and £10 on the Luton Airport Express, before the DART is added. Advance tickets tie you to one train. For a flight that could be delayed, an Off-Peak or Anytime ticket is the safer choice. Thameslink offers a third off for groups of 3 to 9 adults.
Coaches: book National Express at nationalexpress.com or in its app. The £1.50 booking fee is waived if you are logged in to My Account. Greenline 757 tickets are sold at the airport and London Victoria sales desks, online, or from the driver. Both operators sell tickets at the Onward Travel Centre just past Arrivals. Local Arriva and Stagecoach buses take contactless payment, and single fares are as low as £3.
Taxi scams & safety in London
Official taxis: the only rank is the one marked just beyond bus bay A, outside the terminal. The vehicles are Luton Borough Council-licensed hackney carriages on a meter. Before you set off on a long run, ask the driver for an estimate, because no fixed fare to London is published. Turn down anyone who offers a ride inside the terminal. Licensed private-hire cars cannot pick up unless you have booked them.
Pre-booked cars and lifts: the forecourt Drop Off and Pick Up Zone costs £7 for 10 minutes and then £1 a minute. Drivers usually pass this charge on, so ask whether your quote includes it. The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, which a free 24-hour shuttle bus links to the terminal about every 20 minutes.
Ticket traps: buying a train ticket from "Luton Airport Parkway" instead of "Luton Airport" leaves you £4.90 short at the DART barrier. Advance train and coach fares only cover the booked departure. On National Express Standard fares you can switch to a similar coach within 3 hours either side of your booked time.
Step-free access in London
The Luton DART is fully accessible and step-free between Luton Airport Parkway and the terminal entrance. Disability badge holders and older person's bus pass holders ride the DART free, but they must register first on the Luton DART concessions page and upload proof. Approval can take up to 72 hours.
- If you book assistance through your airline, the DART team will help with the connection between terminal and station.
- For help on the train, contact the Luton Airport Express (East Midlands Railway) or Thameslink assisted-travel teams directly.
- Scheduled coaches stop right outside the terminal, and all bus stops are 50–100 metres from the entrance. Check with the coach or bus operator that your service is accessible.
Getting from LTN to Central London (St Pancras / King's Cross)
Two separate trains, one ticket
The DART-and-train route has two legs. The first is the Luton DART, an automated shuttle from the terminal front to Luton Airport Parkway station, about 900 metres away. The ride takes around four minutes and the shuttle comes every four to seven minutes during the day. On its own it costs £4.90. If your National Rail ticket reads Luton Airport rather than Luton Airport Parkway, the DART is already included and the barriers will accept it. That one word is the most common reason people pay twice.
The second leg is the main line south. Two operators share it, and they suit different trips.
Luton Airport Express or Thameslink?
Luton Airport Express (East Midlands Railway) runs non-stop from Parkway to St Pancras in about 22 minutes. Trains leave the upper level of St Pancras, have free Wi-Fi and luggage space in the vestibules, and run roughly every 30 minutes from Monday to Saturday. From the airport, the last weekday departure from Parkway is 23:25, falling to 22:28 on Saturday and 21:58 on Sunday. Advance fares start at £10 before the DART. The airport quotes a total of about 32 minutes from terminal to St Pancras.
Thameslink runs more often, up to eight trains an hour at peak, and takes 24–45 minutes depending on how many stops it makes. It arrives at the low-level platforms at St Pancras and continues through Farringdon, City Thameslink and Blackfriars. Advance fares start at £6.50 before the DART. Thameslink is the route that keeps going after midnight. Night trains run far less often than daytime ones, but the line does not close.
Which to pick: in the evening, take whichever train leaves first. Thameslink is better if you are going to Farringdon for the Elizabeth line, or further into the City. The express is better if you want the shortest time on the train and a likely seat.
Cost for one, two or four people
- Solo: an Advance Thameslink fare plus the DART comes to roughly £11.40. A flexible walk-up through ticket costs more. A 2026 fare guide puts contactless at about £15 off-peak and £19.50 peak, so check the live fare.
- Couple: twice the rail fare is still well under any car quote.
- Three to nine adults: Thameslink's group discount takes a third off, which matters on longer walk-up fares.
- Coach instead: National Express from £7 to Baker Street or Victoria. That is the cheapest seat, but it stops a Tube ride from St Pancras.
When the road wins
A pre-booked car is worth paying for in two cases. One is a family with a pile of bags heading to a King's Cross hotel. The other is a 02:00 arrival that misses the trains. Booking sites quote roughly £75–£120 for a standard sedan to central London. Its main advantage is a fixed price: the quote stays the same whether you land on time or two hours late, which a meter does not offer on a 55 km run. Before you book, check that the quote includes the airport's pick-up zone fee (£7 for the first ten minutes).
The metered black cabs at the rank beyond bus bay A will drive to St Pancras or Euston, but there is no published fixed fare. Third-party guides estimate £85–£120. Ask for an estimate before you get in.
Rush hour and the M1
Coaches and cars come in on the M1 and the Finchley Road. On weekday mornings from about 07:00 and late afternoons, that road can turn a 60-minute coach trip into 90 minutes or more. The train timings barely change. If you have to be somewhere in central London at a set time, take the train.
Small things that save time
- DART barriers take contactless cards, but not Oyster.
- On the express, pushchairs must be folded, and each passenger may bring up to three bags that they can carry themselves.
- At St Pancras, the Victoria, Northern, Piccadilly, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines are all inside the same station complex.
- The DART does not run on 25 or 26 December, so plan Christmas travel separately.
The return trip to Luton
The two lines run differently in the other direction. The airport lists Luton Airport Express departures from St Pancras between about 05:45 and 23:55 on weekdays. On Saturday the first is at 05:33 and the last at 22:18. On Sunday the page gives a first departure of 12:14 and a last of 22:12, so check the morning timetable if you fly early on a Sunday. Thameslink fills the gaps from the low-level platforms and runs through the night, which helps with the 06:00 departures at Luton. Buy the ticket to Luton Airport. If you tap in with contactless, the DART barrier charges separately.
The airport suggests arriving two to three hours before departure. Add about 40 minutes from St Pancras to the terminal, and if you are leaving from a station further south, allow for Thameslink stopping more often.
