Dubrovnik Airport to Mlini

Mlini sits on the Župa Dubrovačka shore about 12 km from the terminal, which puts it a good deal closer than the Old Town and on the same stretch of road you'd drive anyway. That is the quiet advantage families tend to miss: you don't have to push all the way into the city and double back. The village strings itself along a shaded seafront of pebble coves and old watermill streams, with a seasonal boat that runs into Dubrovnik harbour when the weather is warm. The downside is geography. The main coast road, and the local Libertas line 10 that uses it, runs along the ridge above the houses, while most of Mlini lives down at the water. So the question isn't only how you cover the 12 km, it's how you handle the last few hundred metres down to the bay.

The short hop from the rank to your cove

A metered taxi from the stand outside arrivals is the plainest way to reach Mlini, and because the run is only 12 km along the Župa shore it stays cheap by Dubrovnik standards, usually €24 to €30 on the posted tariff. Fifteen minutes and you're at the water. One thing to say out loud to the driver: name your actual bay or hotel. Mlini and its neighbour Srebreno run into each other along the same seafront, and "Mlini" alone can land you at the wrong end of a longish walk with cases. If your rooms are down at beach level, ask to be taken all the way down rather than dropped on the road above, since not every access lane looks obvious from the top.

The bus that heads inland before it comes back

There is a direct public route, but it runs only a few times a day. Libertas suburban lines 11 (from Molunat) and 27 (from Vitaljina) stop on the main road just outside the airport car park and run along the D8 through Mlini towards Dubrovnik, for a few euros paid to the driver; there are no Sunday or holiday services. Otherwise the fallback is €12.50 all in: line 10 passes through Mlini but starts in Dubrovnik, so you first ride the Platanus shuttle past Mlini into the city, then board line 10 heading back east toward Cavtat. Count on about an hour once you add the wait between the two. The shuttle is flight-linked and line 10 runs roughly hourly in winter, so the connection works; it's just that you'll watch the coast road you already covered go past a second time. Worth knowing too: all these buses set you down on the main road above the village, so you finish on foot down to the shore. Fine with a daypack, less fun with a family's worth of luggage.

To the door when your villa is up the hill

Plenty of Mlini's rooms are villas and small hotels perched on the steep Župa access lanes above the water, and that's where a pre-booked transfer earns its place: the driver knows those addresses and delivers you to the gate instead of the nearest main-road corner. You book ahead, and someone waits for you in the arrivals hall with your reference, which is the easy part with tired children in tow. Figure on €25 to €35 for the car, and child seats can be added when you reserve. If your accommodation sent you a pin that looks like a footpath rather than a street, this is the option that saves the uphill scramble.

Renting only if Konavle is on your list

The terminal has the usual desks, Sixt, Hertz and Europcar among them, and a car runs from about €35 a day upward. For Mlini itself, though, you may barely touch it. The village is compact and the seafront is a flat, shaded walk end to end, so once you're settled you can reach the beach, the boat jetty and a few konobas on foot. Where a car does pay off is if you plan to wander south into the Konavle villages, drive up to the city on your own clock, or make day trips down the coast. If your holiday is mostly the pebble beach and a swim before breakfast, the parking and the one-way lanes are more bother than benefit.

For most families the decision comes down to two: the €24-30 taxi if you just want to be at the water in fifteen minutes, or the booked transfer to the door if your rooms sit up one of those hillside lanes. Either way you're set down on the calm side of Dubrovnik, close enough that the city is a short boat ride or bus away when you feel like it, and far enough that you don't have to think about it on the first evening. Drop the bags, walk out to the pebbles, and let the coast road do the rest another day.
