Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport to Heroes' Square & City Park (Városliget)
Heroes' Square is about 21 km from Budapest Airport. The 100E plus metro M1 takes about 50 minutes for 3,000 HUF. The 200E, M3 and M1 cost 850 HUF on a 90-minute ticket; Főtaxi charges roughly 13,000–16,000 HUF.

Heroes' Square is at the top of Andrássy út, with the Széchenyi Baths, the Zoo and Vajdahunyad Castle in the park behind it. From the airport, take the 100E to Deák Ferenc tér and then the small yellow M1 line, opened in 1896, to Hősök tere. Here is how that works, what it costs, and when a taxi is the better choice for a family.

Buying tickets in Budapest
100E Airport Express: ordinary BKK single tickets and travelcards are not valid. You need the airport shuttle single ticket (2,500 HUF). The simplest way to buy it is to tap a contactless bank card on the Budapest Pay&GO reader as you board. It is also sold in the BudapestGO app, at the purple BKK ticket machines by the bus stops and at the BKK customer service counters on the arrivals level of Terminals 2A and 2B. Holders of a monthly Budapest, Pest county or national pass can buy a 1,000 HUF supplementary airport ticket in the BudapestGO app and must show the pass when boarding.
200E bus, metro, trams, bus 16, HÉV within Budapest: standard BKK fares apply. Since 1 June 2025 they are 500 HUF for a single ticket (one line; you can change between metro lines), 600 HUF for 30 minutes and 850 HUF for 90 minutes with unlimited changes. A 24-hour Budapest travelcard costs 2,750 HUF. The airport shuttle ticket is not valid on the 200E. Validate paper tickets in the machine on board or at the metro entrance; app tickets are activated in BudapestGO.
Trains from Ferihegy station: train tickets are not sold in Terminal 2. Buy them in the MÁV app or from the machines on the platform at Ferihegy station, which take cash and cards and work 24 hours a day. A ticket to Budapest-Nyugati costs 500 HUF. BKK passes, county and national passes, and the 24/48/72-hour Budapest Card (sold at the BKK counters in arrivals) are valid on local and InterRegio trains between Ferihegy and Nyugati.
Taxi scams & safety in Budapest
Use the Főtaxi booth. Főtaxi is Budapest Airport's contracted taxi company and the only one allowed to queue at the terminal kerb. Book at the booth by the exit of Terminal 2A or 2B, give your destination address, and the staff will work out the fare before you leave. Every Főtaxi car takes bank cards.
Know the tariff. Budapest taxi fares are set by the city. Since 1 August 2026 they are a 1,300 HUF base fare plus an 800 HUF airport fee (2,100 HUF to start), then 521 HUF per km and 130 HUF per minute of waiting. A typical ride to central Pest comes to about 14,000–17,000 HUF. Uber operates at the airport under the same regulated tariff, so check the pickup point shown in the app.
Ignore offers inside the hall. The airport warns that non-contracted drivers who approach passengers in the terminal may not follow the regulated tariff. Do not accept a ride from anyone who walks up to you, and check that the meter is running once you are in the car.
Step-free access in Budapest
Budapest Airport runs a free assistance service for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility (PRM) under EU Regulation 1107/2006, whichever airline you fly with. Ask for it through your airline when you book. For an arriving passenger, staff help from the aircraft seat through disembarkation (by ambulift or wheelchair if needed), passport control and baggage reclaim, and out to the arrivals hall or car park.
- Call points with a camera and microphone are in both terminal halls and in the City Break and Terminal Parking car parks. Press the button there to tell the assistance team you have arrived or to ask for help.
- PRM assistance phone: +36 1 296 8998. Call only if you need these services.
- The airport also supports blind and partially sighted passengers and passengers with hidden disabilities.
Getting from BUD to Heroes' Square & City Park (Városliget)
The 1896 line
The M1, the Millennium Underground, opened in 1896 for the celebrations of Hungary's thousandth anniversary. It is part of the Andrássy út World Heritage site, and it is still the easiest way to Heroes' Square from the city centre. The stations are just below street level, down short staircases, and the yellow trains are small and frequent. On BKK's weekday timetable they run every three to four minutes at midday.
From the airport, catch the 100E outside arrivals, midway between the 2A and 2B exits, and ride it to Deák Ferenc tér, a ride of about 35 minutes. The 100E needs the 2,500 HUF airport ticket; tap a bank card on the reader as you board. At Deák Ferenc tér, find the M1 entrance, buy a 500 HUF single (or use BudapestGO) and ride towards Mexikói út. Hősök tere is seven stops on. Get off one stop later, at Széchenyi fürdő, for the baths and the Zoo. Allow about 50 minutes from the terminal and 3,000 HUF per adult.
Lowest fare, with two changes
On a 90-minute ticket costing 850 HUF you can use bus 200E to Kőbánya-Kispest, metro M3 to Deák Ferenc tér and the M1 to Hősök tere. The whole trip fits in the time window, usually in about 65 minutes. That saves a lot for a group of adults, but it means two changes and the long escalators at Kőbánya-Kispest and Deák Ferenc tér. With a pushchair and suitcases the 100E route is easier, and with three or more people a taxi may cost about the same.
Family costs compared
Two adults on the 100E plus M1 pay 6,000 HUF; four adults pay 12,000 HUF. Főtaxi, the airport's official taxi operator, charges the city's regulated tariff: 2,100 HUF to start (including the 800 HUF airport fee), then 521 HUF per km and 130 HUF per waiting minute. For the roughly 21 km to the square that comes to about 13,000–16,000 HUF for the whole car. The ride takes around 30 minutes, and the driver can drop you at a hotel on the park's edge or on Dózsa György út.
Book at the Főtaxi booth by the exit of 2A or 2B; the staff work out the fare from your address before you leave and every car takes cards. If you need child seats, a pre-booked transfer is the safer choice. Transfer sites let you choose seats and a larger vehicle when you book, from about 13,500 HUF for a sedan up to more for a minivan. miniBUD's shared vans charge per passenger, from 2,499 HUF each, so for a family of four or five they end up costing more than one taxi.
Going straight to the baths
Some arrivals go straight from the plane to the Széchenyi Baths. If you do, drop your luggage at your accommodation first or arrange storage in advance. The M1 is the quickest way in, and Széchenyi fürdő station is beside the main entrance. Large suitcases are awkward in the small M1 carriages at busy times, which is another reason to drop bags first.
Leaving the park for the airport
For the return trip, take the M1 from Hősök tere or Széchenyi fürdő back to Deák Ferenc tér, where the 100E leaves for Terminal 2 from its own stop on the square. Buy a new 2,500 HUF airport ticket or tap a card at the door. With bags, allow about an hour from the park to the terminal, and a little more on summer afternoons when the 100E fills up at Deák Ferenc tér.
Weekend closures
BKK closes parts of the M1 on some weekends for maintenance. On 3–4 October 2026, for example, a replacement bus ran between Mexikói út and Oktogon, and BKK suggested buses 105 and 210B between Deák Ferenc tér and Hősök tere. Check the BudapestGO app for notices before a weekend arrival. If the M1 is closed, those buses or a taxi are the fallback.
After dark
The M1 stops around midnight; the last weekday train from Deák Ferenc tér leaves at about 23:46. The 100E runs all night, but from Deák Ferenc tér it is a 2.5 km walk up Andrássy út to Heroes' Square, which is a long way with luggage at 1 a.m. For a late landing, a taxi straight from the Főtaxi booth is the sensible choice.
