The airport is on the flat Pest side, and the Castle District sits on a limestone ridge above the Danube on the Buda side. Getting there means crossing the city and the river, then climbing the hill. Public transport does this well: an express bus to Deák Ferenc tér, then city bus 16 over the Chain Bridge and up to Dísz tér. Here is how to do it, plus the taxi and funicular options.

Buying tickets in Budapest

100E Airport Express: ordinary BKK single tickets and travelcards are not valid. You need the airport shuttle single ticket (2,500 HUF). The simplest way to buy it is to tap a contactless bank card on the Budapest Pay&GO reader as you board. It is also sold in the BudapestGO app, at the purple BKK ticket machines by the bus stops and at the BKK customer service counters on the arrivals level of Terminals 2A and 2B. Holders of a monthly Budapest, Pest county or national pass can buy a 1,000 HUF supplementary airport ticket in the BudapestGO app and must show the pass when boarding.

200E bus, metro, trams, bus 16, HÉV within Budapest: standard BKK fares apply. Since 1 June 2025 they are 500 HUF for a single ticket (one line; you can change between metro lines), 600 HUF for 30 minutes and 850 HUF for 90 minutes with unlimited changes. A 24-hour Budapest travelcard costs 2,750 HUF. The airport shuttle ticket is not valid on the 200E. Validate paper tickets in the machine on board or at the metro entrance; app tickets are activated in BudapestGO.

Trains from Ferihegy station: train tickets are not sold in Terminal 2. Buy them in the MÁV app or from the machines on the platform at Ferihegy station, which take cash and cards and work 24 hours a day. A ticket to Budapest-Nyugati costs 500 HUF. BKK passes, county and national passes, and the 24/48/72-hour Budapest Card (sold at the BKK counters in arrivals) are valid on local and InterRegio trains between Ferihegy and Nyugati.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Budapest

Use the Főtaxi booth. Főtaxi is Budapest Airport's contracted taxi company and the only one allowed to queue at the terminal kerb. Book at the booth by the exit of Terminal 2A or 2B, give your destination address, and the staff will work out the fare before you leave. Every Főtaxi car takes bank cards.

Know the tariff. Budapest taxi fares are set by the city. Since 1 August 2026 they are a 1,300 HUF base fare plus an 800 HUF airport fee (2,100 HUF to start), then 521 HUF per km and 130 HUF per minute of waiting. A typical ride to central Pest comes to about 14,000–17,000 HUF. Uber operates at the airport under the same regulated tariff, so check the pickup point shown in the app.

Ignore offers inside the hall. The airport warns that non-contracted drivers who approach passengers in the terminal may not follow the regulated tariff. Do not accept a ride from anyone who walks up to you, and check that the meter is running once you are in the car.

Getting around

Step-free access in Budapest

Budapest Airport runs a free assistance service for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility (PRM) under EU Regulation 1107/2006, whichever airline you fly with. Ask for it through your airline when you book. For an arriving passenger, staff help from the aircraft seat through disembarkation (by ambulift or wheelchair if needed), passport control and baggage reclaim, and out to the arrivals hall or car park.

  • Call points with a camera and microphone are in both terminal halls and in the City Break and Terminal Parking car parks. Press the button there to tell the assistance team you have arrived or to ask for help.
  • PRM assistance phone: +36 1 296 8998. Call only if you need these services.
  • The airport also supports blind and partially sighted passengers and passengers with hidden disabilities.

Getting from BUD to Buda Castle (Castle District)

From the plain to the hill

Budapest was formed in 1873 by joining Pest, Buda and Óbuda, and the trip from the airport still feels like crossing from one to the other. Terminal 2 is on the Pest plain, south-east of the city. The Castle District is a narrow ridge of streets above the Danube with the Royal Palace at its southern end. From kerb to Castle it is about 26 km. By car, the route crosses one of the Danube bridges and then climbs the hill.

The 100E and bus 16

The most practical public-transport route has one change. Board the 100E Airport Express at the stops between the two terminal halls and ride to its last stop, Deák Ferenc tér, which takes about 35 minutes. The fare is 2,500 HUF, paid by tapping a bank card on the reader as you board. At Deák Ferenc tér, find the stop for bus 16 towards Széll Kálmán tér. The bus passes Széchenyi István tér, crosses the Danube on the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, opened in 1849, and stops at Clark Ádám tér at the foot of the hill. It then climbs to the Fisherman's Bastion stop (Halászbástya), Dísz tér and Szentháromság tér by Matthias Church.

Get off at Dísz tér for the Royal Palace and Sándor Palace, or at Szentháromság tér for Matthias Church and the Bastion. The ride from Deák Ferenc tér is short, and bus 16 runs roughly every 9–12 minutes in the daytime. It needs a standard 500 HUF BKK single, so this route costs 3,000 HUF in total.

The 850 HUF version

On a 90-minute ticket at 850 HUF the trip costs much less. Take bus 200E to Kőbánya-Kispest, metro M3 to Deák Ferenc tér, then bus 16 up the hill. All three legs are covered as long as you finish within 90 minutes, which a typical trip of about 70 minutes does. Allow more if the 200E is crowded or you just miss a bus. Validate the ticket on the first bus and keep it until you step off at the top.

The funicular

From Clark Ádám tér, the Budavári Sikló funicular has climbed to the palace terrace since 1870. Since February 2026 a standard one-way ticket costs 4,500 HUF. BKK passes and ordinary tickets are not valid on it. It is a sightseeing ride rather than transport, and staying on bus 16 to Dísz tér gets you to the same place for the price of the ticket you already have. Take the funicular if you want the view, not to save time.

Taxi to the top

Főtaxi, the airport's contracted taxi firm, works from booths by the exits of 2A and 2B. Give the staff your hotel or the square you want and they will calculate the fare before you leave. Under the regulated tariff that took effect on 1 August 2026 (2,100 HUF start, 521 HUF per km, 130 HUF per waiting minute), a trip of around 26 km usually costs about 15,500–19,000 HUF and takes 35 minutes or more depending on Pest traffic and the bridge. If you are staying in one of the hotels on the hill, give the hotel's name and let the driver choose the way up.

A pre-booked car from a transfer site costs roughly the same, about 14,000–21,000 HUF for a sedan. The difference is that the price is fixed when you book, at any hour. That is useful if you land late and do not want to watch a meter while the car works its way up the Castle Hill streets.

Cobbles and luggage

The Castle District is paved with old stones and has narrow pavements. Wheeled cases are noisy and slow on them, and some side streets slope sharply down towards the Víziváros below. If your accommodation is on Úri utca or Országház utca, check with the host which bus stop is closest before you set off. Bus 16 at least saves you the metro stairs and escalators, which is easier with luggage.

Arriving late

The 100E runs all night, every 15–45 minutes after 01:00. Bus 16 also keeps running into the early hours from Deák Ferenc tér, at roughly half-hourly intervals around midnight. Check the next departure in the BudapestGO app, because night timetables vary. If you land after midnight with heavy bags, a Főtaxi to the door costs much more but saves a dark wait at Deák Ferenc tér and a walk over cobbles. A seat in a shared miniBUD van, the airport's official shuttle, starts at 2,499 HUF. It is slower because of other drops, but for a solo traveller it is the cheapest door-to-door option at night.
