Buying tickets in Budapest

100E Airport Express: ordinary BKK single tickets and travelcards are not valid. You need the airport shuttle single ticket (2,500 HUF). The simplest way to buy it is to tap a contactless bank card on the Budapest Pay&GO reader as you board. It is also sold in the BudapestGO app, at the purple BKK ticket machines by the bus stops and at the BKK customer service counters on the arrivals level of Terminals 2A and 2B. Holders of a monthly Budapest, Pest county or national pass can buy a 1,000 HUF supplementary airport ticket in the BudapestGO app and must show the pass when boarding.

200E bus, metro, trams, bus 16, HÉV within Budapest: standard BKK fares apply. Since 1 June 2025 they are 500 HUF for a single ticket (one line; you can change between metro lines), 600 HUF for 30 minutes and 850 HUF for 90 minutes with unlimited changes. A 24-hour Budapest travelcard costs 2,750 HUF. The airport shuttle ticket is not valid on the 200E. Validate paper tickets in the machine on board or at the metro entrance; app tickets are activated in BudapestGO.

Trains from Ferihegy station: train tickets are not sold in Terminal 2. Buy them in the MÁV app or from the machines on the platform at Ferihegy station, which take cash and cards and work 24 hours a day. A ticket to Budapest-Nyugati costs 500 HUF. BKK passes, county and national passes, and the 24/48/72-hour Budapest Card (sold at the BKK counters in arrivals) are valid on local and InterRegio trains between Ferihegy and Nyugati.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Budapest

Use the Főtaxi booth. Főtaxi is Budapest Airport's contracted taxi company and the only one allowed to queue at the terminal kerb. Book at the booth by the exit of Terminal 2A or 2B, give your destination address, and the staff will work out the fare before you leave. Every Főtaxi car takes bank cards.

Know the tariff. Budapest taxi fares are set by the city. Since 1 August 2026 they are a 1,300 HUF base fare plus an 800 HUF airport fee (2,100 HUF to start), then 521 HUF per km and 130 HUF per minute of waiting. A typical ride to central Pest comes to about 14,000–17,000 HUF. Uber operates at the airport under the same regulated tariff, so check the pickup point shown in the app.

Ignore offers inside the hall. The airport warns that non-contracted drivers who approach passengers in the terminal may not follow the regulated tariff. Do not accept a ride from anyone who walks up to you, and check that the meter is running once you are in the car.

Getting around

Step-free access in Budapest

Budapest Airport runs a free assistance service for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility (PRM) under EU Regulation 1107/2006, whichever airline you fly with. Ask for it through your airline when you book. For an arriving passenger, staff help from the aircraft seat through disembarkation (by ambulift or wheelchair if needed), passport control and baggage reclaim, and out to the arrivals hall or car park.

  • Call points with a camera and microphone are in both terminal halls and in the City Break and Terminal Parking car parks. Press the button there to tell the assistance team you have arrived or to ask for help.
  • PRM assistance phone: +36 1 296 8998. Call only if you need these services.
  • The airport also supports blind and partially sighted passengers and passengers with hidden disabilities.

Getting from BUD to Budapest-Nyugati Station

Why the train is worth a look

Nyugati pályaudvar was built by the Eiffel company and opened in 1877. Trains on the line south-east towards Cegléd and Szeged call at Ferihegy, the station on the airport's side of the city. On MÁV's timetable for an ordinary weekday, trains leave Ferihegy for Nyugati about four or five times an hour in the daytime and take 23 to 28 minutes. The fare is 500 HUF. The first train is just before 04:00 and the last shortly after midnight.

The station is not at the terminal. Take bus 200E from the arrivals level at Terminal 2 and get off at Ferihegy vasútállomás, the fifth stop, after about nine minutes. The bus needs a standard BKK single (500 HUF) or a time ticket, so the trip costs 1,000 HUF. Allow about 45–50 minutes from the bus stop to Nyugati, including the wait for a train.

Buying the rail ticket

Train tickets are not sold in Terminal 2. Buy one in the MÁV app before you leave the terminal, or from the machines on the platform at Ferihegy station, which take cash and cards around the clock. BKK monthly passes, county and national passes and the Budapest Card are valid on stopping and InterRegio trains between Ferihegy and Nyugati. A 90-minute BKK ticket is not, so if you use one on the 200E you still need the MÁV ticket. Some long-distance InterCity trains on this line show seat-reservation notes in the app. Check the app when you buy, but the 500 HUF fare is what it currently quotes for every departure.

For departing passengers there is a 300 HUF discounted 200E ticket from Ferihegy station to Terminal 2. It is sold only together with a train ticket to Ferihegy, at MÁV ticket offices and machines. That makes the station route slightly cheaper in the airport direction.

The metro alternative

Bus 200E continues past Ferihegy station to Kőbánya-Kispest, the southern end of metro M3, after about 22 minutes. M3 runs north through the city to Nyugati pályaudvar with no change, roughly every five minutes. A 90-minute ticket at 850 HUF covers the bus and the metro, so this is the cheapest route, about 150 HUF less than the train. It takes about 50 minutes and does not depend on a train timetable. The train is the better choice when one is due soon after your bus arrives. The metro is the better choice late in the evening, when trains are less frequent but M3 still runs every few minutes.

The 100E Airport Express is a third option: 2,500 HUF to Deák Ferenc tér, then two stops north on M3 on a 500 HUF single. At 3,000 HUF it costs three times as much as the train route and saves little time. Take it only if you want a seat for your luggage all the way.

Taxi to the station

Főtaxi, the airport's official taxi firm, takes bookings at its booths by the exits of Terminals 2A and 2B and gives you a fare estimate based on the address. For the roughly 24 km to Nyugati, the city meter rates (a 2,100 HUF flag-fall including the airport fee, then 521 HUF a kilometre) work out at about 14,500–17,500 HUF. The trip usually takes 30–40 minutes, crossing the Nagykörút ring road, which is often congested in the evening. A pre-booked car from a transfer site costs about the same, from roughly 13,500 HUF. You fix the price when you book, so there is no meter. There is also miniBUD, the airport-licensed shared van, which charges from 2,499 HUF a head for central drop-offs.

Late arrivals and early starts

The last train from Ferihegy to Nyugati leaves just after midnight and the next one shortly before 04:00. The 200E serves the station through the night on its night route to Határ út, but it is no use if there are no trains. Between about 00:30 and 04:00, take the 100E to Deák Ferenc tér and walk the 1.3 km up Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út to Nyugati, or take a Főtaxi. For a very early train out of Nyugati, the first M3 from Kőbánya-Kispest leaves at about 04:26 and the first train from Ferihegy just before 04:00. Either works if you are staying near the airport.

Platform notes

  • Ferihegy station has platforms in both directions; trains for Budapest are signed towards Budapest-Nyugati.
  • Nyugati's main hall faces the Nagykörút ring road. M3 comes up beside it, and trams 4 and 6 stop outside.
  • Keep the MÁV ticket on your phone until you leave the platform; conductors check on board.
