Buying tickets in Frankfurt
Frankfurt has two railway stations and the difference decides your journey. The Regionalbahnhof under Terminal 1 handles S-Bahn and regional trains: the S8 and S9 reach Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in 11 minutes for about โฌ5.35โ6.90, every 5โ10 minutes, continuing to Hauptwache and Konstablerwache for the old town. The Fernbahnhof, a short covered walk away, is a full long-distance station where ICE services stop โ Cologne about an hour, Stuttgart an hour and a half, Munich three, without ever entering the city. That is why many passengers here never take a taxi at all. From Terminal 2, ride the free Sky Line people mover to Terminal 1 first. Buy RMV tickets from the platform machines or the app. There are no ticket barriers, which misleads visitors: inspections are frequent and travelling unticketed carries a real fine. Westbound, the same S8 runs direct to Mainz and Wiesbaden in about 30 minutes โ both no further in time than central Frankfurt.

Book accommodation before flights in those windows. The station district around Hauptbahnhof is also noticeably rougher after dark than the rest of the centre, which is worth knowing when choosing where to stay rather than a safety warning about the journey.

The Book Fair
Held in October, running since the fifteenth century in some form, and the largest publishing trade event in the world. The first three days are trade only; the weekend opens to the public and the halls fill accordingly. Costume-wearing manga readers and rights agents share the same escalators, which is a sight in itself.
What a fair week does to Frankfurt
Hotel rates multiply โ three to five times normal is routine โ and availability collapses across the whole Rhine-Main region. Rooms sell out in Mainz, Wiesbaden and Darmstadt. Anyone attending books accommodation before flights, and anyone visiting Frankfurt for other reasons checks the Messe calendar first.
Staying further out on purpose
Because the S-Bahn network is dense and the airport line runs both directions, staying in Mainz or Wiesbaden during a fair is a normal strategy rather than a compromise. Both are half an hour from the airport and about the same from the Messe with one change.
The tower
Messeturm, the pencil-shaped tower at the eastern edge of the site, was briefly Europe's tallest building when it opened in 1991. It is an office building rather than a fair venue and is not open to visitors, but it is how everyone navigates the district.
Setup and breakdown days
Exhibitors with stand material use different access routes and time slots from visitors, and the organisers publish these separately. A private transfer is the standard arrangement for anyone arriving with equipment; a taxi driver will not know the goods entrances.
Eating around the grounds
The halls have catering priced for a captive audience. The Bockenheim district immediately north has ordinary restaurants at ordinary prices and is a ten-minute walk from the northern entrances.
The Festhalle
The domed hall from 1909 at the centre of the site is a concert and event venue as well as part of the fair complex, and it has a considerably darker twentieth-century history than its architecture suggests โ a memorial plaque records its use in November 1938.
Getting back for a flight
Fourteen minutes to the airport on the reverse journey, but the S-Bahn platforms at Messe are busy in the hour after a fair closes. If your flight is tight, leave before the halls empty rather than with them.
How large "large" is here
The site covers about 578,000 square metres and the walk from the eastern entrances to the western halls is close to a kilometre inside the grounds. There is a free shuttle bus circulating during events, and most people underestimate the distances until they have crossed them once with a bag of catalogues.
