Stirling is one of the few places outside Edinburgh with a choice of direct coaches from the terminal: Ember's electric E4 and two Citylink routes. All of them skip the city centre and head west across the Forth valley, which makes the coach faster and cheaper than going into Edinburgh for a train.

Before you ride

Buying tickets in Edinburgh

Airlink 100: pay on board by contactless (Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or with the exact fare in cash; American Express is not accepted. Tickets can also be bought in advance in the Lothian Bus & Tram app. Adult single £6.00, open return £8.50, child (5–15) £3.00 / £4.25, family return (2 adults + 3 children) £22.00. Standard Lothian day tickets and DAY caps are not valid on Airlink.

Edinburgh Trams: buy before you board, either from the ticket machines at the airport tram stop, in the et app or Bus & Tram app, at edinburghticket.com, or by tapping on and off on the platform with a contactless card. The Airport Single is £7.90 (£7.50 pre-booked online) and the Airport Open Return £9.50 (£9.25 online); a city-zone ticket does not cover the airport. Combined tram-and-rail tickets are sold at machines in the check-in hall.

Services 17 and 18: the standard Lothian city single (£2.40 adult from 22 February 2026) is valid to and from the airport on these two routes.

Coaches: Citylink, Ember, Stagecoach and Fly sell tickets online and in their apps; Citylink also sells from the driver subject to space. Ember tickets can be booked up to 10 minutes before departure.

Arrive safe

Taxi scams & safety in Edinburgh

The only taxi rank at the terminal is run by Capital Cars in the East Terminus, across the plaza from arrivals. A booking is required under council private hire rules: you can make it online in advance or at the rank desk. Inside the City of Edinburgh the fare is set by the council tariff (from 25 July 2026: £3.60 initial charge Monday–Friday 06:00–18:00, £4.80 evenings and weekends, then 30p increments). For any trip ending outside the city, the fare must be agreed before the journey begins.

Uber and other private hire drivers collect from the charged pick-up zone on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park or the free zone in the Long Stay car park. Be wary of anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a ride: licensed drivers do not tout, and every legitimate pick-up happens at the rank or the marked zones. Note that the airport tram fare is higher than the city tram fare; a cheaper city ticket bought by mistake is not valid from the airport stop.

Getting around

Step-free access in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Airport provides free special assistance; it is best booked through your airline at least 48 hours before travel, and help points are placed around the terminal and car parks. Staff recognise the Sunflower lanyard for hidden disabilities, and wheelchairs can be provided for passengers with temporary injuries.

  • Every Edinburgh tram has two wheelchair spaces in the middle carriage and six luggage racks.
  • Blue Badge holders get one hour of free access in the airport car parks (press the intercom at the exit barrier), and there are Blue Badge bays near the shelter in the free drop-off zone.
  • Citylink recommends wheelchair users book online so a space can be confirmed; Ember lets you reserve a wheelchair space free of charge.

Getting from EDI to Stirling

West across the Forth valley

From Edinburgh Airport to Stirling is roughly 49 km by road, past Grangemouth and Falkirk with the Ochil Hills appearing ahead. Stirling Castle sits on its crag above the old town, and the Wallace Monument on the Abbey Craig, so you see your destination well before you reach it. Because the airport is west of Edinburgh, there is no reason to go into the capital first.

Ember E4: the flat-fare electric coach

Ember runs fully electric coaches between Edinburgh and the Highlands, and its E4 service, which continues to Fort William, calls at the airport terminal. The airport lists departures every hour between 07:12 and 01:25 from Stop E. When Ember launched its expanded airport stops in February 2026, it quoted a flat single of £6.55 from Stirling, the same price whether you book a month ahead or ten minutes before departure. Tickets are sold online and in the Ember app up to ten minutes before the coach leaves.

Seats have USB charging and there is free on-board 5G. Wheelchair and bike spaces can be reserved without charge, which is less common than it should be on intercity coaches.

Citylink's two options

Scottish Citylink runs two direct routes from Stop D. The 909 goes via Bo'ness, Grangemouth and Whins of Milton to Stirling, then on to Stirling University and Dunblane, with an average journey time of about an hour. The 978 is the long-distance route to Oban, calling at Grangemouth and Stirling before heading on to Callander, Crianlarich and Tyndrum; Stirling is about an hour away on this one too. The 909 is the better option for Stirling University, which it serves directly.

Fares on both routes are set on the Citylink website and vary by booking; we could not confirm a current published Stirling single, so check when you book. Citylink allows one large case and one small bag free.

The train, with a change

For trains, the airport recommends taking the tram to Edinburgh Park, which has services to Falkirk, Stirling and Dunblane. ScotRail lists up to two trains an hour on this route and a lowest price from £5.65 one way, calculated on a return fare. Add the airport tram fare (£7.90, or £7.50 bought online) and the train costs noticeably more than Ember overall, with a change. It is still worth knowing about if the coach timetable leaves a long gap.

Driving and private cars

Capital Cars, whose rank sits across the plaza, serves journeys outside Edinburgh too, but the meter only applies inside the city boundary, so for Stirling the fare is quoted before departure. Booking ahead, a saloon costs from about £71, with estates and people carriers around £82–91. That price covers the vehicle, so four people sharing pay under £25 each, close to the train for the same group. Car hire is available at the airport and the M9 is a few minutes away.

Where the coaches stop in town

Coaches to Stirling set down in the city centre, a short walk from the railway station and the shopping streets below the old town. From there, the climb to the Castle and the Old Town Jail is steep but brief. Students heading for the University campus should use Citylink 909, which serves it directly; anyone on Ember will need a short connecting bus or taxi from the centre.

Late arrivals

Ember's last E4 departure from the airport is listed at 01:25, which covers most evening flights. After that, a pre-booked car or a quoted taxi is the only realistic way to reach Stirling before morning.

Choosing between them

Ember E4 is the simplest answer for most people: direct, hourly and cheap at a fixed price. Use the 909 if you are heading to the University or Dunblane, the 978 if you are carrying on into the Trossachs, and a private car if you are a group or arriving after the last coach.
